Lockport is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ontario and Erie counties. The population was 27,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lockport was Nicholas Lockwood in 1792. The town was named after General John Forbes's (1756-1824) estate called "Lockport" near Niagara Falls. In 1814, a group of farmers who had been driven out of Graysville by Indians discovered land at the mouth of the Genesee River and founded Lockport as their new home. The original lock system that protected navigation on the river was built by George Stephenson (1781-1833) and it became known as "the Stephenson Locks". After years of construction, operation and maintenance, the locks were repaired in 1848 by Major General Garnet Wolcott (1793-1865).lockport post office opened on July 1, 1850; it continued to be called Graysville until 1862 when it changed its name to Lockport to honor Colonel John Fenton (1800-1875), one of its earliest settlers. In 1854, a group of local merchants formed a company to build an electric streetlights in downtown Lockport. Lockport is a town in the Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–New Rochelle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lockport was Nicholas Rochefort and his family who arrived in 1788. The town's first stop on the Erie Canal was at present-day Elmira. At that location, they built a gristmill to grind flour for their goods upriver. In 1802, John Godfrey and his brother-in-law erected a log cabin on what is now corner of Main Street and First Avenue North. This became the nucleus of what would become Lockport Village. In 1809, Daniel Dennison purchased from Nicholas Rochefort two lots in what is now Lockport village for $100 each. Dennison named this tract "Dennison's Land", after himself and his father-in-law Daniel Dodge (a rich man from Delaware). The first settlers in Lockport were Daniel Denton and his family who came from Maryland in 1784. They founded a small village on the east side of the river where they built a house and store. In 1805, John Smeaton made an unsuccessful attempt to take possession of what is now Lockport from the Dutch settlers on the west side of the river. The following year, Smeaton and others organized a company to purchase 2 million acres (10 km²) of land at $3 peracre ($100 per km²).lockport was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1825 by act of Assembly 575/2. In 1830-31 work began on building what would become known as "The Erie Canal". This project was financed by state legislation that provided for state assistance with canal construction projects if approved by both houses of the legislature. Gov..
