Lynbrook, New York was a small town in upstate New York that served as the primary air base for the United States Air Force during World War II. The town's history can be traced back to 1917 when it was founded by Colonel George A. Armstrong and his wife, Mrs. Alice Ladd Armstrong, on land that now forms the southern boundary of Lynbrook Township. The first airplane used in combat by the United States Air Force crashed at Armstrong Field on Long Island on October 15th, 1941. Lieutenant General Jimmy Doolittle and his wingman, First Lieutenant Clifford Berryhill were flying an experimental P-51 Mustang from nearby Farmingdale Municipal Airport when their plane went down near Mount Hope Bay. The wreckage lay for weeks after the crash until it was finally discovered by local farmers who found a piece of metal with a serial number embedded in it. That discovery allowed for identification of the remains as those of Lieutenant General Jimmy Doolittle's favorite plane - the Lockheed P-38 Airacobra! In 1942, Armstrong Field became home to one of America's largest air bases - Strategic Air Command (SAC) had been formed two years earlier as part of Franklin D Roosevelt's effort to secure world domination through strategic bombing techniques. SAC operated ten thousand planes at Armstrong Field which included bombers, fighters and reconnaissance aircraft along with thousands of military personnel and civilians who worked at various sites around Lynbrook including factories manufacturing uniforms, tanks and other munitions; housing developments for fighter pilots and their families; runways supplying fuel airplanes to RAF Bomber Command; schools teaching children how to fly; stores selling food, clothing and supplies; barracks providing living quarters for officers and enlisted men; mess halls serving meals throughout the day or evening for 1,200 servicemen plus their dependents... all within walking distance of each other! In late 1943 SAC moved its operational headquarters from Bolling AFB in Washington D.C., about 50 miles away to Elmendorf AFB on Northcentral Alaska where they would remain untilactivated in 1956 following Japan's surrender without ever participating in any combat operations! Armstrong Field played an important role during World War II not only because it housed America's first jet airliner but also because it was home to numerous research stations focused on developing new weapons systems including radar technology which helped guide Allied bombers into enemy targets while also providing valuable data about German anti-aircraft defences! In 1942 Glenn Tilton developed what is now known as "the Tilton High Frequency Radar System" at Armstrong Field which helped provide warning information about Japanese submarines operating off American shores! The station continued being used until 1960 when its antenna were dismantled due to budget cuts!!!
