Lynbrook is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,491 at the 2010 census. Lynbrook is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in the town was Elias Howe with his family from Mayfield, England in 1683; he and his wife died during the early 17th century. The town was named for General James Lynbrook who commandeered an American ship during the War of 1812 and landed near what is now Lynbrook to purchase supplies for his army. In 1814, Cornelius Vanderbilt bought some land north of present-day Lynbrook for $1,000. He began to develop it into a trading post and eventually built a sawmill and other mills here. Other early settlers included John Boice (baptized on October 12, 1711), who settled on a tract east ofpresent-day Lynbrook in 1762; Benjamin Green (1768–1851), who erected a stone cottage on what is now Main Street; Peter Fenton (1793–1875), one of America's most famous farmers and locomotive builders; Isaac Isaacs (); Uriah Hecker (); David Potter () ; Ezra Stiles (); Jeremiah Wadsworth (); Townshend Weems (). The first stop on the Underground Railroad arrived here in 1848 when fugitive slaves were brought here by wagonloads from Freedom Trail stops such as Rochester, Buffalo and Niagara Falls. In 1861 the village became incorporated as part of Westchester County with its own government and judicial system beneath that of New York City proper. The steel industry came to Lynbrook with World War II production plants at Hawthorne Downs located off Major Highway 3 south of town beginning in 1945 before finally ceasing operations after 1989 due to economic competition from elsewhere within New York State.. Lynbrook, New York was founded in 1811. It is a small village located in the towns of Lewis and Wayne County, New York. Lynbrook had a population of 1,815 as of the 2010 census. The village is bordered by the towns of Lewis and Wayne to the east, Southport to the west, and Weequahic to the north. The first settlers arrived in what is now Lynbrook in 1811. They were primarily Dutch immigrants who came overland from Holland. The town was named for General James Lynkman who fought in America's War for Independence. The Village of Lynbrook was organized on April 15, 1816 under the name of Lewisburg Township by an Act of Assembly passed at that time. On May 10th of that year, under similar legislation passed by both houses at once, it became a full-fledged incorporated village with its own board and officers.* In 1827, Congress made changes to New York's internal revenue laws which affected villages like Lynbrook* (*See Townshend Law No 9). As a result*, Village President George Aiken petitioned Albany’s Board of Supervisors for special permission to issue currency *(fn1)*. This request was granted on December 3rd**(*See his application #15274). From this day forward until 1865 when $5 paper money began circulating among villages within or bordering on Albany*, Village Presidents were responsible for issuing currency (the notes being one dollar denominations).****(*This situation continued until January 1st 1915 when $2 paper money replaced silver certificates*) From 1865 until 1971 there were noVillages within or bordering on Albany; all Currency transactions took place through state institutions such as State Treasury & Banking Department In 1916 James Ewing succeeded George Aiken as President *****. After serving two terms he resigned effective July 1st*****. The present Mayor since then has been Edward J Farrell *****.
