Lynbrook is a census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City–Manhattan borough. The first settler in what is now Lynbrook was Anthony de la Hogue who arrived on a ship from France in 1664. He named his settlement after himself and his family's home village of L'Hogue in Normandy. The next year, de la Hogue and others founded a townsite called North Lynbrook on the east side of Cayuga Lake west of present-day Westbury. In 1765, however, the town site was abandoned for lack of water power; it reverted to Indian possession about two years later. In 1809, Peter Cooper purchased three tracts of land south of modern-day Lynbrook from the Lenape Native Americans for $1,000. Founder and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt bought additional land totaling 9 acres (3 ha) in 1825 for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). The area became known as Vanderbilt Square after him and his son Andrew earned their fortune running companies such as Standard Oil and Atlantic Telegraph Company through various real estate transactions around this time period. During the American Civil War some residents fought for Confederate forces while others sided with Union troops; many residents did not have military experience or had no choice but to stay behind when Nassau County was divided into pro-Union and pro-Confederate regions following the war's conclusion. In 1865, all unionists were ordered out by General George McClellan and all pro-Confederates were expelled from Nassau County; this action effectively endedLynbrook's status as an official community within either branch of government.. Afterward most residents returned to their prior lives until 1925 when Lynbrook Village Inc., a self-help organization formed by local women with agricultural backgrounds to promote agriculture among rural villagers across upstate New York decided to establish itself there permanently.. In 1951 newly annexed East Meadow took over much of what had been grazingland surrounding Vanderbilts Square so that development could be carried out without affecting those living nearby since they would still be able to access their land at any time.. The village has evolved over time into one where businesses include four grocery stores (), several restaurants (), two banks (), two doctor offices (), a library (). Today there are also several shops operated by locally owned businesses outside the village proper including Oneida jewelry store (), Realtor () services (including home staging), car rental (). There are also numerous small parks dotting its periphery which offer sunbathing or playing fields for children during warm weather months ().
Lynbrook is a hamlet in the town of Lynbrook, New York, United States. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. The hamlet was named for John Lynch, who built a log cabin here in 1828. In 1829, he and his wife had a daughter named Alma and another daughter Sarah. The Lynch family kept their cabin until after they died in 1903. It burned down in 1908. In 1861, Cornelius Pogue located some land here that would become Lynbrook Village after purchase from Nicholas Fenton of Westchester County. A post office calledLynbrook village was established on December 12, 1865; it remained in operation until it closed on November 15, 1896.
