Massena is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 8,927 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Massena were Dutch farmers and traders who traveled through the area in 1614 looking for new land to sell. In 1764, John Montresor founded a trading post on the banks of the Genesee River near present-day Massena. By 1800, Massena had a population of 1,500 people and it became an agricultural community with sawmills and gristmills being among the first businesses in town. In 1812, Yankee Commodore George Washington's army invaded Canada during the War of 1812 as part of his drive into Canada to occupy what was then British North America. After landing at Oswego Bay on Long Island on September 12th (the day after victory over British forces at Yorktown), General Washington's army marched northwestward through Canadan territory towards Niagara Falls before turning back due to bad weather near Buffalo on October 14th. At this point General Washington distributed food and supplies to troops encamped around Buffalo while he continued his march northeastward downstate towards Albany where he arrived on October 17th. On October 24th (two weeks after General Washington had turned back), he reached Niagara Falls without losing any men or equipment. The town of Massena, New York is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Nicholas-Jacques de Massena, a French general who fought in the American Revolution and was rewarded with an appointment as a justice of the peace. The first settler in what is now Massena was Alexander Shortridge, who arrived in 1795. In 1824, John Plummer purchased land adjacent to present day Massena from Nicholas-Jacques deMassena. Over time, other small farmers subdivision land into larger parcels and built homes around their large gardens orchards or on ponds that supplied water for irrigation. By 1870, there were over 20 houses in town and farming had become an important part of local life. During World War II, Massena played a significant role as one of nine strategic military points along the southern border of New York state where troops were quartered during the war effort. After the war ended, many residents moved away to pursue new opportunities but some returned to live in town through naturalization ceremonies held every few years until 1960 when all vestiges of European immigration stopped and Massena became fully Americanized. Today, residents are active members of several community organizations including Main Street United Methodist Church which has been hosting annual tradewinds events since 1938; Stonington Lake Association which manages private fishing lakes within walking distance; and Muskegon Heights Golf Course which offers day or weekly rates for membershiphips starting at $27 per week/year
