Massena is a small town in the Catskills region of upstate New York. The population was 6,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the south bank of the Rensselaer River, about southwest of Rome and southeast of Watertown. The town was first settled in 1786 by soldiers from Canada who were Militia during King George's War. The name "Massena" means "place where we gathered flints." Massena had two stores and one blacksmith until 1810 when it became a post office with three stores and one school. In 1828, Josiah Morse located a sawmill on the river near where Massena now stands and began to make lumber for Utica. In 1830, John Davenport arrived from Massachusetts with his family and started a grocery store in what is now Davenport Hall which still stands today as a museum dedicated to him and his father (Samuel Davenport). In 1836, freight rates were raised so that farmers could no longer afford to haul goods downriver so James Hickey built a grist mill on land that he donated which became known as Hickey's Mill after him. In 1846, an Orphan Asylum was founded in Massena by Rev Samuel Eliot Morin who later served as pastor at Trinity Episcopal Church in Utica In 1865, Nathaniel Pappan purchased land east of town along the Rensselaer River for $1 per acre which he renamed Pappan's Hill after himself After years of being used primarily for agricultural purposes (including raising winter hay), local residents decided they wanted their own high school so they formed the village board in 1903 which then voted to name it MassENA High School . Menzies Collegiate Institute also opened its doors there in 1916 . On September 15th 1924 - just over 50 years ago - Stroudsburg native Harry Truman visited our school while campaigning for President during his run for election against Taft . At that time our school had an enrollment of just 11 students but we soon grew into an 8-year middle/high school with over 200 students including future Governor Cuomo! Today our school has an enrollment of more than 500 students making it one of the largest private schools within easy commuting distance from New York City!

Massena is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Aurora-Buffalo, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Massena were several families from Westchester County who arrived around 1792. They built their homes on both sides of the creek that flows through town. A post office was established in 1812 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1854. In 1848, three men named Brown founded a sawmill and gristmill on the east side of the creek that flowed through town. The mill continued to be operated until 1915 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1870, two brothers named Decker bought the mill from Brown and started operating it as a flour Mill until it closed in 1944 due to World War II bombings and then being used as an army barracks during the war years. In 1881, John Fenton purchased land north of town from Hiram Dickson for $10 per acre which he developed into what is now known as Fenton Park (the name given to it by him). He also built a store and put up a wooden fence around his property to protect it against Indians who had been living there since before his purchase date. This area became known as Fenton Square after him. The first school building in Massena was erected here in 1886 by Mrs Parkside which served local students until 1939 when Central High School replaced it with its present building which still stands today). From 1868-1870, Jeremiah Ryan ran an early dry goods store across the street from Central High School located between State Road 12th Street and Elmira Road (later renamed Dovercourt Boulevard). In 1870 he sold his store to George Smedley who opened another store next door called "Smedley's Shoes" which lasted for about 20 years before closing down also due to lack of customers/ competition from other stores near by or within driving distance of Massenatown limits (this would later becomeknown as Baxter Avenue)). In 1903 Toni Ransom opened her own grocery store at 4 Delaware Avenue which would remain open for many years afterwards becoming one of the most successful small businesses ever located within walking distance of any community center or shopping mall anywhere! Heinrichs Drug Store opened on Main Street just south of where Smedley's Shoes once stood on Dovercourt Boulevard sometime after World War I but did not last very long because Shoprite supermarkets had taken over much earlier! Finally outlasting all others this Grocery Outlet Store closed its doors on April 15th 2009 just shy of 100 YEARS old!
