The town of Middletown, New York was chartered on November 3, 1786 by Governor George Clinton. The population of the town at its incorporation was 1,546. The first settler in what is now Middletown was John Dickinson. He and his family moved to the area in 1792 from Westchester County, New York. Middletown grew rapidly due to its location as a crossroads for transportation and trade between eastern New York and western Pennsylvania. By 1810 the town had a population of 5,000 people. In 1815 the village of Middletown Proper was established within the limits of the new town and remains an important part of that community to this day. Middletown's growth continued until after the American Civil War when it fell victim to economic decline caused by departing residents, lack of industry and competition from neighboring towns such as Great Falls (now Great Falls Junction), Scranton and Wilkes-Barre (now Wilkes-Barre Township). However, by 1870 Middletown had returned to its previous prominence as an important commercial center with a population over 10,000 people. In 1907–1908 construction began on what would become Wall Street in downtown Middletown which ushered in a period of rapid economic development for the town/.
