Mineola is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the2010 census. Mineola is located on the southern shore of Long Island and is part of the larger community of Hawthorne. It is bordered by the villages of Patchogue to the east, Sayville to the west and Fresh Meadows to the north. The first Europeans to visit Mineola were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew sailing for Spain in 1524. They left three weeks later with news that an island off Manhattan had been discovered by them and named it after their country: Ischia (Island). The Dutch East India Company claimed Ischia in 1614 but no one came back so they decided to name their new land "New Netherland" which they did until 1776 when British troops invaded because King George III wanted control over all of New Netherland. In 1764 Jameson family bought 640 acres (250 hectares) from Pierre-Jacques Marquette who had explored what would become Mineola in 1614 while looking for a route to Asia through North America. After several years of survey work, he named his new land "Mineola" after his mother's birthplace in Modena, Italy. In 1802 John Jacob Astor founded a fur trading post at what is now Harbor Bay on Mineola beach opposite Sayville Harbour. This was where Astor first developed his shipping empire which includedloading goods from Asia into New York City for export downriver to points beyond during the 1800s peak of American commerce. It wasn't until 1861 that Mineola became part of Westchester County when then-Governor Charles Evans Hughes designated it as part of Hawthorne Township on Long Island due to its strategic location between Sayville and Fresh Meadows Roads on both sides of Long Island Sound towards Brooklyn Heights across Jamaica Bay
