In 1924, Mr. Morelli donated his entire collection of shotguns to the club along with many other firearms pieces from his lifetime collection. He and his wife, Martha Washington, built a house there in 1789. Their son George Washington lived at Mount Vernon for most of his life. In 1814, the United States Congress approved a plan to build a new capital on the mountain, and President James K. Polk appointed John Marshall as the first chancellor of Columbia University. TheWashinton family sold their share of Mount Vernon in 1826 to Robert E. Lee and others for $12 million dollars. After Lee's death in 1865, it passed through several hands before becoming part of the federal government's land holdings until it was transferred to the state of Virginia in 1921.
