Washington was so impressed by Graves' gift that he ordered all Admirals to give him parcels on their birthdays. The origins of Naval Unit Commemorative Medals (NUCMs) lie in 1967 when Rear Admiral James E. Watkins presented Commander USS Constitution (CV-4) with a set of 10 NUCMs in memory of her commanding officer, Vice Admiral Harry S. Truman. The first recipient was Vice Admiral William Jett who received one in commemoration of his 40th birthday on May 1st, 1968. As time passed additional commanders were added to the list including Rear Admnents Clifford Keyes and David Ladd aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), Captain Thomas Frielen from USS Proctor (APD-1) and Commodore Ray Millin from USS Kitty Hawk (YS-5). Today there are over 2,500 recipients associated with Naval Unit Commemorative Medals across all services branches worldwide! These medals commemorate occasions ranging from training exercises to deployments throughout World War II and subsequent conflicts; operations against terrorism; Sailors' weddings or other special events; or just exceptional performance by their unit during wartime service!
