Tactical coffee is a term that has been around for centuries. The first reference to tactical coffee can be found in the 17th century when Dutch traders brought back beans from Java. Coffee was used as a stimulant and it was also used as an ingredient in medicines. In 1898, Italian explorer and coffee trader Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered the islands of New Guinea and Papua New Guinea while on his way to Australia. He traded spices, tea, and coffee with the locals and this discovery led to the European exploration of these new areas. In 1906, Dutchman Karel van der Waals discovered South Africa while on his way to Antarctica. He trade resources with local tribes and this discovery led to the development of South African apartheid. In 1912, Danish sailor Christian Aagaard landed on New Zealand's North Island after sailing around Cape Cod. He tasted the country's first espresso in an old shipwreck off Auckland coast. This event helped spur interest in espresso among Europeans who were traveling through NZ at that time. The first café in NZ opened its doors in 1916 by Count Zinsser von Helmontzsch near Dunedin city center. The growth of espresso continued throughout World War II as Allied troops invaded Europe searching for supplies of food, fuel, weapons, and other materials needed for war effort. At various points during the war cafés serving tactical coffee became popular among soldiers stationed near them or within hearing distance of their cups of joe! Espresso began appearing more prominently on menus across Europe after Allied forces liberated France following World War II; this was due both to increasing demand from troops (who wanted something able to keep them awake during long marches), as well as recognition that café owners could make a lot more money catering specifically to military personnel than they could selling food alone (which didn't get much attention from restaurants). After WW2 there was great interest in different types of coffees including Arabic-style tobaccos which had become available since then thanks largely to Turkish traders travelling through Greece/Syria etc., so many cafes started stocking Arabica beans (or vice versa) all over again! Some people think that cafés using only Arabica beans are really unique – I’m not sure if I agree 🙂
