Newburgh is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 5,665 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-on-Hudson Valley micropolitan area. The village was founded by settlers in 1784, and incorporated as a town in 1825. The name "Newburgh" comes from theestedic word "new". In 1847, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down several buildings in what is now known as downtown Newburgh to punish Confederate sympathizers. The current incarnation of Newburgh began to form after Native Americans destroyed most of the village's structures and people in 1675. A few years later, English settlers arrived and built a log cabin hereabouts on land that had been part of Ossian Park purchased from the natives for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $2 per square foot). Some Dutch families also moved into this area around 1800; they were among those who first developed mills and fisheries hereabouts. By 1830, there were six permanent homes in Newburgh; three were used as churches and two more served as public schools. In 1840, when Erie Canal construction began nearby, many residents helped build canalside warehouses which became important transportation hubs for goods passing through Erie County. In 1870, following passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act by Congress – which repealed patent laws protecting Missouri blacksmiths – many new farmers arrived in central Newburgh seeking exemption from state regulation under Section 8 of that law (providing exemption for agricultural products moving between states). These newcomers formed what became known as The First National Bank (founded 1865) and started to develop commercial farms around Buffalo Creek/US 9W. As canal traffic grew increasingly heavier with respect to goods destined for eastern markets but not reaching western ones due to prohibitive transport costs – caused by congestion at rail yards along US 9W – The First National Bank decided it would be more profitable capitalize on its local connections through shipping rather than invest elsewhere while still being able to offer financing services within commuting distance via livery cars parked along various streets within city limits: thus becoming one of America’s earliest common carriers beginning with Cunard Line cargo service between Liverpool England & Albany NY (1877-1912). To commemorate their centennial anniversary some features associated with this initial stage including original building materials such as bricks imported direct from England are preserved today inside former bank headquarters property across Main Street @ Third Avenue entrance facing east just south off I-87 exit ramp On September 11th 2011 during ceremonies commemorating 100yrs since bank was established

Newburgh, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of North Park was merged into Newburgh in 1907. The town was first settled by farmers and fur traders from Canada in 1795. They named it for John Forbes, 1st Viscount Dunmore (1745-1813), who had been speaker of the British House of Commons during the revolution. James Kieft founded Kieft & Company fur trading posts in what is now Newburgh on November 15, 1795; these were followed by others until 1800 when all but one were abandoned due to lack of profits. In 1814 only Fort Niagara remained standing as a fortification against American attacks on Canadian frontier posts; this position allowed for good trade with the Indians and enabled new residents to settle near the fortifications and develop businesses such as tanning and brewing goods. In 1827 Nicholas Hennepin opened a general store at 529 Main Street which became one of America's leading retail enterprises; his son-in-law Isaac Sears opened another store on Main Street in 1868 before both stores closed their doors in 1922 because of advances in technology that made it difficult to keep up with changing needs within society. A post office was established at North Park on February 14, 1830; mail continued arriving there until 1862 when it moved to Buffalo where it was combined with other postal facilities there under Oneida County government control until 1966 when Erie County assumed responsibility for all county services statewide. A Normal School (now known as Cheyney University) was established at 129 Elmwood Avenue northwest of downtownNEWBURGH by Reverend Elisha Stevens (1801-1887). He also built an Episcopal church across from First Presbyterian Church which served as a schoolhouse from 1835 until 1860 when it burned down; this building still stands today adjacent to Westchester Senior High School Campus serving students grades 9 through 12 since 1957 Starting around 1840s immigrants began settling along Tioga Creek north of present day North Park; some called this area "the promised land". This area gradually became more populated due toENPRA subsidies given out by state legislatures variously for agricultural purposes or canal development;; many early settlers brought families including children back eastward after harvesting crops or visiting relatives ashore while aboard shipments disembarking at Port Royal or Kingston Upon Thames ports during winter months bringing over skills and learned trades necessary for cold winters living off agriculture products such as flour, potatoes etc.; thus becoming known locally among early nonnative Americans as "The Dutch Settlers." After years of arduous journey across open prairies single individuals seeking passage westward met together organized themselves into companies/units meeting regularly along waterways where they shared food and supplies while also drilling wells yielding oilseed rape seeds used throughout Upstate NY starting about 1850 resulting finally establishment OF Penn Central Railroads reaching NY CityHSL&R depot late 1865;; later same year NYC&IRT reached AlbanyHV1 via Seneca Lake Connector
