North Tonawanda, New York is a small town in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Tonawanda were French traders from Quebec City in 1614. They built Fort Carillon on the east bank of the White River and trading posts with other European settlements were established here until 1774 when British settlers took over control of this region. English farmers arrived in large numbers beginning around 1800 and by 1837 had penetrated all but two miles (three kilometers) of eastern North Tonawanda, making it an open campground for settler destroyers who burned anything they found not needed or useful for their new village or farmsteads. North Tonawanda served as a stopover for travelers between Utica and Albany during much of this period and was also home to one smallpox pandemic that struck Buffalo in 1812-1813 before being vanquished by that city's vaccination campaigns. During World War I munitions production began at nearby Canastota munitions plant; this led to increased trade with Canada which helped support local businesses during wartime shortages elsewhere in Upstate New York. After World War II industry declined throughout most upstate New York but continued operations at Canastota until 1984; after which it closed its doors permanently leaving behind a permanent community whose economy relies largely on environmental tourism, agriculture, research and development activities related to hydroelectric power plants operated by NYSDEC Metropolitan Water Supply Authority within Niagara Falls National Park - one third (2003)of its total budget! North Tonawanda was a small town in the Catskills region of New York State. It is now a ghost town, although it still has some living residents. North Tonawanda was founded in 1834 by English settlers who were looking for land to grow corn and beans. The area now known as North Tonawanda was part of what is now Ulster County. The first post office called North Tonawanda was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1852, the first school opened in North Tonawanda, and continued operations until 1865. In 1891, the last school closed down in NorthTonawa due to lack of students. In 1907, the north side of town split from the south side due to disagreements over local taxation issues. In 1915, a new courthouse was built in North Tonawanda; this structure still stands today and is used as a storage facility for the town’s archives. In 1927-1928, construction began on what would become the largest development ever made in North Tonawanda; this project would include an addition to the existing courthouse which would be named after Judge Augustus Pyle Hatfield Jr., one of America's most famous jurists at that time. The judge's addition became operational on October 1st 1928 and remains today as one of the most popular tourist destinations within town limits today! The growth of society throughout America during these years caused many people from outlying villages like NorthTonawa to move into larger towns such as Niagara Falls or Buffalo for work opportunities or education opportunities outside of their home village/townships/counties etc... This migration away from small villages- particularly those located near major cities- had a large impact on how important agriculture became within Northeastern United States during these times... With more people working outside their homes instead of growing crops there were less folk left available to tend farms that produced food for themselves and their families... As farmland became increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain with fewer workers available to do so it led to increased poverty among rural residents which often contributed towards social unrest amongst those communities where farming once provided subsistence incomes
