This change allowed him to more accurately price his beans and ensure quality control. In 1862, Waddell relocated his operations to North Tonawanda and opened the first store on Main Street in what is now known as Village Square Shopping Center. Waddell's legacy can be seen throughout today's industry; many businesses still roast their own beans onsite or use only world-class roasters like Peet's Coffee & Tea Company, Blue Bottle Coffee Co., Flying Dutchmen Coffee Roasters, etcetera. Additionally, many towns in Upstate New York still have local cafes that serve tactical espresso drinks called "tonights" or "coffee hours."

North Tonawanda is a small town in New York County, on the border of Erie and Niagara Counties. The population was 5,354 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda is located on the banks of the Mohawk River. The first European to visit what is now North Tonawanda was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Nova Yorkia". The Dutch founded Fort Orange (now Albany) in 1624 and called it "Tonawanda" after their leader, Hendrick Corstiaensen, who had been killed there by Iroquois resistance two years earlier. In 1714, when Great Britain acquired rights to all of New Netherland from Spain, they renamed the territory for George Washington as "New York". In 1716–1718, during the Revolutionary War, British forces burned down most of what is now North Tonawanda while occupying present-day Erie County; however, some buildings still stand including Fort Orange which still stands today as a museum and tourist attraction. In 1812, during Canada's acquisition of Ontario throughthe Northwest Ordinance – part of overall governmental consolidation across Canadathe United States gained independence from Great Britain. On July 1st 1813 North Tonawanda became an incorporated village with a population of fifty nine people under its own governance whereas Buffalo had been its capital since 1800 (the first permanent American settlement). On February 9th 1912 North Tonawanda elected John Husted as its first Mayor and he served until his resignation due to ill health on September 2nd 1912 which caused him to miss that year's general election held November 3rd 1912 which resulted in Alfred Wertheim being elected Mayor instead John Husteds term ended on December 31st 1912 when Edwin Crane took office as mayor effective January 1st 1913 . entailed with responsibility for all aspects city government including but not limited to finance street cleaning cemeteries Parks etc., much like current day City Manager role During World War I grenades were used against German positions near Johnstown by local farmers euphemistically known as 'pits' or 'bunkers'. After hostilities ceased these sites were left unoccupied because they were considered too easy targets for enemy snipers
North Tonawanda was first settled in 1795 by the Dutch. The town was named for the Tonawanda River, which flows through it. The town developed as a shipping and agricultural center, and became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century. North Tonawanda was also a significant cultural and educational center during this time.
