The town was named for General Israel Putnam, who fought in the American Revolution and was rewarded with land grant near Ogdensburg. The first store in Ogdensburgh opened in 1807. By 1830, there were six churches in Ogdensburgh (oneMethodist, three Presbyterian denominations), eleven schools (grades 1-8), and twenty-three businesses. During World War II, much of what is now central Queens County was occupied by troops stationed at Fort Drum or nearby strategic locations such as Lighthouse Point or Jamaica Bay Naval Air Station. As a result of this occupation, many aspects of municipal life changed forever including water supplies and firefighting; however nightlife remained largely unchanged despite increased security measures introduced during wartime conditions such as blackout times. In 1962 the town's boundaries were revised to include portions of Babylon Township which lay immediately eastward along Route 9W from central Queens County; these changes followed local referendums held that year to commemorate both Brooklyn's centennial anniversary and Niagara Falls' centennial anniversary - both events occurring just weeks after Albany's reopening following reconstruction following an earthquake that struck New York State on September 14th that year which killed over seventy people including twenty-four residents of Albany & Rochester). Today most villagers living within Central Queens Village still identify themselves as "Ogilvie" while those living eastward within Babylon Township continue to call themselves "Hempstead".
