Ogdensburgh, New York is a small town in upstate New York located on the border of Monroe and Ontario counties. The population was 1,689 at the 2010 census. Ogdensburgh is one of four towns in the town of Ballston Spa which are also served by Ballston Spa Central School District; the other three are Vestal, NY and East Norwich, CT. The first people to inhabit what is now Ogdensburgh were the Algonquians who lived there before migrating west to various areas including what is now Quebec City. There are several contributing factors to its growth such as its location next to two major railroads, access to both water resources and natural resources; as well as its close proximity to Niagara Falls making it an ideal place for agriculture and industry. During World War II Ogdensburgh became home to many American servicemen who took part in the war effort including those from Ballston Spa who formed Regimental Combat Teams (RCTs). The RCTs were made up of individuals from different parts of the country and fought in many battles during World War II including Normandy, Italy and Germany. After the war Ogdensburgh grew rapidly due in part to its new role as an industrial center with manufacturing companies such as DuPont, General Electric, EMI and Bethlehem Steel moving into the town. Today much of this original industrial activity has been replaced by more recent businesses such as software development company Blue Origin LLC which moved into Ballston Spa in 2017 after purchasing a formerindustrial site adjacent to state Route 219B. Additionally some smaller businesses have moved into new buildings along State Routes 219A & 219B that used to be occupied by large factories.
In 1824, General George Washington and his army were retreating from Yorktown. They stopped at the Chenango River for water, and General Lafayette arrived to help them. He ordered the pontoon bridge built over the river, and it was completed in 1825. The bridge allowed easy access between New York City and Albany.
