In 1945, during VE Day ( victory over Nazi Germany), Mayor Harry Ahern dedicated a memorial gate at Main Street and Court Avenue honoring all those who fought in World War II - both American soldiers who died overseas and Japanese nationals who also died during hostilities in New York State. In 1960, after forty years of business growth for the Merchants Exchange Store it closed its doors due to economic reasons but not before serving as an important part of local life for residents from across the boroughs that lived within walking distance of its doorsteps! Ogdensburg is a small village in the town of Rome, New York, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rome-on-Hudson Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area. Ogdensburg is located on the south bank of the Hudson River and has a ZIP code (12672) that covers most of what is now Rome. The first Europeans to visit Ogdensburg were French traders in 1614 when they were looking for a site for an arsenal; they named it "Guyenne". Jesuit missionaries explored the area in 1624 and called it "Nova Hibernia". In 1764, General George Washington visited Ogdensburgh and recommended that the fort be built there to protect settlers from Native Americans. The fort was completed in 1765, and served as an artillery garrison until 1802. In 1826, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to purchase land along both banks of the river for use as military posts and townships became organized around them. On December 12, 1827, President Andrew Jackson signed legislation creating Rome Township and appropriating $50,000 for its construction; on January 1st following year new townships were formed: White Plains Township (the present day Bronx), East Harlem Township (the present day Manhattan), Morrisania Township (now Valhalla), Sleepy Hollow Township (now Woodside Village), Fishkill Creek Township (now Westchester County), Bushwick Borough (now Brooklyn Heights) and Newtown Townshend (now Hicksville). The lack of railroad access made development slow until after World War II when Interstate 95 arrived; afterwards industries include heavy manufacturing such as auto parts, plastics and appliances; today it employs about 60% of Ogdensburg's workforce. After extensive popularization on MTV overdriven advertising campaigns during the late 1980s through early 1990s by local cable companies,[1] many residents began moving away or leaving their villages altogether during this period[2][3]. However some remain throughout all these changes including mayor Rudy Giuliani who has lived there since childhood[4], while others have moved out completely to larger towns nearby like Syracuse or Buffalo Niagara Falls
