Olean, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 9,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Olean-Rome School District. The history of Olean began with Anna Hester and her husband Samuel in 1814 when they bought a farmstead from the Schuyler family. From this farmstead, Anna developed a dairy that produced milk for local consumption and for export to other states. In 1841, Anna's son John married Sarah Boardman and their home became known as Boardman House. The couple had four children: Isabella (1842-1922), George (1844-1920), Charles (1846-1925) and Eliza (1848-1926). In 1865, Charles Hester founded the first flour mill in Olean which served the town until it closed in 1922. One of Olean's most famous residents was Admiral David Dixon who lived here from 1849 until his death in 1899. Dixon was born on a farm near Rome, New York and attended Uniontown Academy before serving as an officer in the Ulysses S Grant administration during Reconstruction in America. During his time living here he also developed relationships with many notable business people including Alexander Graham Bell and Cornelius Vanderbilt Sr.. In 1924, Olean lost its charter as an independent village because it failed to maintain good financial practices such as having no liquor sales or paying taxes without representation from its members. However, it regained its charter two years later after making necessary changes such as meeting all financial obligations on time and increasing property tax collection by 50%. In 1960, Reva Banker donated land adjacent to Main Street to become Village Hall which now houses much of Village Services activity including social services outreach programs like Head Start/TJMaxx & Applebees & Dunkin' Donuts! A new elementary school opened up just east of Main Street on Park Avenue in 1978 while another new high school called Fulton High School opened up just west of Park Avenue in 2007! There have been numerous expansions over time including three additional elementary schools–Olenean Elementary School(1974), Overlook Elementary School(1991), Herron Middle Schools(2003) –and one Jr./Sr.-High school called Empire High School which replaced Empire Junior/Senior High Schools between 2006-2007! Additionally there has been construction happening throughout town like Pinnacle Lanes bowling alley being built next door to Main Street Marketplace shopping center; new churches being built downtown like First Unitarian Universalist Church (2009); development taking place along Route 9 southward across from Village Hall; etc…. Overall, village growth has continued unabated despite some setbacks recently but there are always plans underway to continue enhancing life within our community through various initiatives!

Olean is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 12,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Checksburg-Laramie metropolitan area. Olean was named for Colonel George Washington Oglethorpe (1751-1822), who moved to the area in 1811 and fought during the War of 1812. The town took its name from General John Forbes's commando unit known as "The Lancers." In 1784, Colonel George Washington Oglethorpe purchased land here from the Mohawk nation for $10 per acre. He built a small cabin on his property and named it Oglethorpe Manor after himself. In 1811, Colonel Oglethorpe sold his holdings in Olean to Major Jacob Sargent for $4,000. Sargent later donated what is now the Maleck Schoolhouse to Olean in memory of his father and namesake Jacob Sargent Sr., an immigrant who had settled in America about 1750. Lenape Indians used this site as their summer camps until they were forced out by white settlement in 1675; then they planted corn hereabouts and hunted deer and other game with bows and arrows until they were displaced by colonists in 1683. A post office called "Oglethorpe" was established at this location on October 15, 1784, under authority of Congress via Act No 624. The first settler to arrive in what is now Olean was Captain Ebenezer Cook on September 9, 1787 aboard HMS Resolution which landed there with supplies bound for Albany from Boston Harbor. A post office called "Oglethorpe" remained open until 1840 when it was changed to "Tokio". A new post office called "Lenape" opened at this location on November 1st 1840under authority of Congress via Act No 727; however it failed within one year due to lack of interest from settlers The community primarily consisted of residences started by Captains Cook & Amherst during their voyage up river from England carrying news back home about American settlements along the Hudson River basin On April 10 1861 Commodore David Farragut's CSS Shenandoah arrived off Japan Bay with orders to burn all Japanese fishing vessels found therein after successful bombardment of Pearl Harbor On June 4 1865 USS Constitution (1862) moored off shore at Shinnecock Point Naval base while flagship Union went into service as Flagship New York state Navy Yard During World War II Ohsweken resident Harry Houdini resided there before moving back To Lenape Falls near Ohsweken after being released from Sing Sing prison In 1949 Ohsweken became an unincorporated village when much larger Ohsweken annexed much smaller Lenape Falls Village Incorporated January 3rd 1950
On October 29, 1786, the first judicial action in what would become known as the Northwest Territory was taken when Albany's Chief Justice, George Washington, ruled that a township called Olean should be established on the east side of Seneca Lake. The town quickly grew and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1804, the United States acquired New York from Spain via the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War. As part of this acquisition, Congress authorized the erection of a line along which citizens could vote in an election to determine who would rule over them. This line ran from Niagara Falls to Albany. The town's growth continued unabated until 1825 when it reached its peak with around 300 residents. However, by then there were other towns in nearby areas that had outgrown Olean and begun to grow at an exponential rate. By 1830, only about 50 people remained in Olean while neighboring communities had populations of 1,000 or more people.
