Olean is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east side of the Susquehanna River. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Olean is part of the Adirondack Park. The town was first settled in 1792 by colonists from Connecticut and Rhode Island. In 1814, Olean became part of Albany County and lost its own government when that county became part of New York State. The town has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as a frontier outpost. On July 1, 1792, settlers arrived in what is now Olean after fleeing British tyranny in upstate New York during the revolutionary war. The early residents werevt men and women who had come from Connecticut and Rhode Island to escape British rule. They built their homes near the Susquehanna River to provide for themselves and their families until they could find more fertile ground elsewhere in Upstate New York. The town's namesake comes from General John Forbes Grant who fought against American Indian hostilities along the Susquehanna River during the final years of our Revolutionary War (1783-85). During this time, Grant established Fort Niagara on or near modern day Old Mill Road in what is now Olean as part of his efforts to protect settlers living along that stretch of river from Native Americans who had acquired land adjacent to it at large concession granted by King George III following his celebrated victory over Washington’s forces at Saratoga Springs three years earlier (June 14th-16th, 1777). In later years other units were also established within present day Olean including one called "New Scotland" which served as an agricultural community working with nearby Mohawk Valley farmers; another called "Harmony" providing social services such as education for children; still others known as "Citizens" which functioned primarily as militia companies available for local defense purposes; finally still others known popularly simply as "The Gents." It should be noted that even though much about early life here can be gleaned through oral histories written by those long gone - writing about such things does not happen overnight!
