Olean has been home to a small marine business for over 100 years and Marine Giftshop is one of the oldest businesses in town. It started as a gift shop on Main Street in 1903 and became an online store in 2013. The business has since moved to its current location on State Street. The first Marine Giftshop was founded by Harry Halsey and his wife Marie Currie in 1903 on Main Street in Olean. Olean, New York is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 1,994 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Otsego County and the largest town on the border of Livingston and Otsego Counties. Olean is located in western Otsego County on State Route 9 south of its larger neighbor, Oneida Lake. The first settler in what would become Olean was John Slattery who arrived from Ulster County, Ireland in 1814. He built a cabin on an island in Oneida Lake near what is now Slattery Elementary School. Over time more settlers arrived and by 1825 there were twenty-four people living in Olean. By 1870 there were ninety-six residents. The first post office was established in 1879 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. Olenean (named for Oleana) started as a small village but grew over time to become one of the most important villages within the Town of Oneida Lake because it had a school, store and other infrastructure necessary for doing business with neighboring towns such as Allegany and Live Oak (now part of Syracuse). In 1913–14 Olenean's library burned down due to inadequate insurance coverage which did not seem to deter community members from keeping up their library which eventually became one of the largest public libraries east of Buffalo In 1922 construction began on Oneida Falls Bridge which connected Oneida Lake with Livingston county making Olean even closer to its larger neighbor In 1924 Slattery Township was created from parts of two previous Towns; Olenean & Olenean Township In 1930 There were 121 residents living within Five Points Village when it merged into Two Rivers Township When Five Points Village disbanded however all existing property within boundaries except three parcels that formed West Branch Road still belonged to individual citizens making development very difficult without government assistance

Olean was a small town in the Hudson River Valley of upstate New York and is now part of the town of Kingston. The first Europeans to visit Olean were French traders who landed at what is now Albany on September 10, 1624. They named their new arrivals "Olivier" after one of their number, Olivier de Montaigne. The village grew quickly due to the demand for goods brought downriver by the Royal Dutch East India Company (RDEIC) and other fur traders. By 1670, there were 100 residents in Olean and it had a school, chapel, storehouse, blacksmith shop and two homes. In 1714, an act was passed by the General Assembly authorizing the erection of a stockade around the village against attacks by Native Americans. This fortification proved successful and helped protect Olean from attack for over 50 years. In 1807, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Fort Niagara was manned by American troops under Colonel John Pemberton until it surrendered on October 15th following heavy casualties sustained in three days of fighting. On that day also occurred what is generally considered to be Olean's greatest victory when twelve British soldiers were killed while attempting to cross Burr Lake into Canada from Ossining via storming boats provided by local resident Ebenezer Schenectady (later Governor Livingston). A plaque honoring this event can be found at nearby Waterfordtown Battlefield Park where much later a military road ran parallel theretobattlefield terrain still visible today as well as a small creek running through its center which served as battlefield water supply
