Olean, New York is a small town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Olean is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Edmund O'Neil, who donated land to the village in 1871. The first post office opened in 1875. In 1906, the village merger with nearby Seneca Falls merged into Olean village. The Village of Olean amalgamated with neighboring Seneca Falls on February 17th 1906 which resulted in a total population of 2,552 people living within two villages combined. On July 4th 1912 an act was passed by the New York State Legislature known as "An Act to provide for better management of the public lands adjacent to and within boundaries of the City of Buffalo", which created Niagara Park and included parcels located between Seneca and Niagara Falls streets on both sides of what is now Main Street in Olean (itself now cornering North Memorial Drive). This parcel forms much of today's eastern borderline with Niagara Falls while also including much or all of today's western borderline withSeneca Falls
