Olean, New York is a small town located in the Adirondacks of New York State. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. Olean is one of six towns in Schoharie County. It lies on the east side of the Mohawk River and is bordered by Grand Island to the north, Scranton to the east, Tonawanda to the south, and White Lake to the west. The first settler in what is now Olean was Nicholas Saroyan who arrived there in 1786 with his family from Canada. In 1802 John Morse settled there also with his family from Connecticut. By 1830 there were a total of ninety-six people living in Olean including twenty-one farmers, sixteen blacksmiths and six mechanics/shopkeepers/tailors. In 1834 Ebenezer Green purchased 640 acres (241 hectares) of land around present day Olean from Nicholas Saroyan for $1,000 cash. This included four miles (6 km) of woods which became known as Green's Forest after Ebenezer Green himself. From this point forward until 1966 when it was sold to IBM for development into an industrial park, Green's Forest served as a recreational area for locals and visitors alike used for hunting, fishing and hiking among other activities during those years; today it remains primarily forested with some agricultural acreage within it as well. This idea gained support from then-Governor John Graves Simcoe who believed that Canadien settlers would bring more industry and commerce to the area than English settlers would do.
