The navy deployed gift history in Olean, New York goes back to 1861 when the town was first settled. The soldiers who served in the Union army during the Civil War brought home a wealth of items, including military equipment and supplies. These donations were often stored away in military hospitals or warehouses until they could be distributed to civilians. In 1946, when New York state became an independent country, Olean's military history was preserved and memorialized with a plaque on Route 9. The town also hosted a large naval exposition in 1951 that showcased American warships from all branches of the navy. This event marked the beginning of the Olean Naval Museum which currently preserves more than 4,500 artifacts from maritime history.
