The town's first fort was built in 1798 by Colonel John Graves Simons. One of the most famous battles in Oneonta's military history was the Battle of Saratoga, which took place on September 17, 1813. The battle resulted in a key victory for American forces and helped to establishAmerican hegemony over the North American continent. Today, Oneonta is home to two United States Military academies- West Point and Annapolis- as well as one Japanese Military academy, JMA. In addition, several local businesses offer military supplies and services to their customers who are members or guests of the military. There is also an active militia that provides security within and outside of town. Oneonta's rich military gift history can be traced back to when Colonel John Graves Simons decided to settle his family in this small community posturing against British invaders in 1795. At that time, Oneonta had only three buildings- two log cabins and one frame structure- but it soon became known as "The Fort City." In 1812, General Andrew Jackson invaded New York from Canada at the head of an army made up mostly of volunteer soldiers under Major General Henry Dearborn. Many residents believed that General Jackson would return home without any resistance after routing Canadian troops at Saratoga; however, he instead moved on into Pennsylvania with his army intact and successfully defended Philadelphia against repeated British attacks during the War of 1812. Aftermath of this successful defensive campaign led Congress to pass an act authorizing President James K Polk to award battlefield honors such as pensions and land grants to former patriot volunteers who participated in this conflict overseas. This act became law referred to as "the Grant Act". Following America's entry into World War I on April 6th 1917 via Congressional acts (Public Law 523 & Public Law 721), donations from individuals stepped up significantly both domestically (eastern industrialist Augustus Kelley donated $10 000)and abroad (King George V sent $25 000). On July 1st 1917 - just four days after America entered World War I - General Pershing ordered all U S Army units stationed overseas be mustered out with date stamps dating back to 1915 so that these men could receive veterans benefits similar to those enjoyed by veterans returning home from European theatersmerely months earlier! As hostilities continue throughout Europe until Armistice Day 1918 - Commander US Forces Europe (C4USA) received ordersdirecting themnot merely cleanup operations following WWI but rather rapid deployment across multiple theatres! For nearly six years immediately following WWII spending neutrality acceded rapidly becoming associated primarily with Corvettes/Aermacchi helicopters then later F-5E Raptors maritime strike fighters before exiting service briefly retiring again between 1965 – 1970 while CVN 65 decommissioned her last nuclear powered submarine USS Scorpion SSN 9091 on December 12th 1975 becoming first major NYC Naval Vessel ever retired!! With effect from November 15th 1977 all naval vessels including submarines were transferred automatically into inactive status pending disposition rites being conducted pursuant To Executive Order 13466 which revoked obsolete Navy regulations governing decommissioning processes Tentative arrangements have since been made for USS Constitution Museum will house remains until final disposition decision is made

Oneonta is located at (41.836362,-75.035694). The nearest major city is Syracuse; it is about 15 miles (24 km) east of Oneonta and about 30 miles (48 km) south of Buffalo. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,531 people, 892 households, and 604 families residing in the town. The population density was 83 per square mile (30/km²). There were 963 housing units at an average density of 31/sq mi (13/km²). The racial makeupof the town was 97% White and 2% African American

Oneonta is a small town in the town of Oneonta, New York, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Oneonta was Nicholas Lowrey who arrived in 1785 from Canada. He and his family set up a gristmill on the river which they named "Lowrey's Mill". They also took out a patent for their land that year. When Alexander McMaster settled there in 1824 he named it after his father General George Washington McMaster who had died during the War of 1812. General McMaster had been a captain in the Union army and had fought at Battle of Saratoga and Battle of Bull Run. The post office was founded here on February 14, 1827 by Amos Alden with name changed to "Oneonta" on July 10th following incorporation as a village by an act of the New York State Legislature on September 3rd. The first store opened here December 15th,1827 by Jens Jacobsen & Co.. John Haggerty started as an outfitting merchant here and continued until 1860 when he moved to Rochester where he ran one of the first grocery stores outside of NYC/NYC area In 1865 James Kapp bought this site from Mr Jacobsen for $2,000 cash and began building what would become Kapp's Store which opened its doors November 12th 1865 . This store continued operations until 1978 when it closed due to economic recession . When Kapp's Store closed most likely because it could not compete with larger local stores during those tough times Oneonta lost all its Businessmen including prohibitionist organizer Harry Blackstone who formed 'Blackstone's Brewery' here but that still remains today one Of The longest running breweries In Upstate New York
