Ossining is within the Onondaga County seat of Syracuse. The community began as a small hamlet on the banks of the Oswego River in 1812. It grew rapidly in the 19th century due to its location near Lake Ontario and its connections to two railroads. In 1854, Ossining became an incorporated village and was renamed after General Alexander Hamilton (1757-1827). The village had a population of 1,500 by 1870 and 2,000 by 1900. In 1954, Ossining merged with neighboring communities of Addison and West Seneca to form one large city with a population of 10,000 people. The merger caused some traffic congestion but it also created new opportunities for businesses and residents in both villages. Today, Ossining is home to several shopping malls as well as numerous high-tech companies and professional offices. The community has twice been chosen as an important cultural center for New York State by the state government; in 1998 it was selected as the site for NYS Museum Of Art; and again in 2013 as part of NYS governor’s plan to increase access to arts education statewide.

In 1825, Ossining became part of Albany County and experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location midway between Albany and Buffalo; this commerce led to its nickname as "The Gateway City." Although Ossining lost some economic significance after statehood in 1912, it remains an important community with a rich history that can be enjoyed today by visitors from all over the world who come enjoy hiking through its rolling hills or taking a stroll through its quiet streets full of century-old architecture.

In recent years, Ossining has reverted to its rural roots, however, it remains a popular tourist destination for both locals and visitors alike.
