Ossining, New York is a small town located in Livingston County, New York, United States. The population was 7,643 at the 2010 census. Ossining is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Nicholas Ossining and his family who settled in 1792. The first post office in Ossining was established on December 1, 1812. Boyne Hall (now an elementary school) was built in 1847 and became a girls' high school in 1951. The community had its own hospital from 1889 until it closed due to financial difficulties in 1916. In 1924, the state legislature passed a bill designating Ossining as a county seat for Livingston County with responsibility for local government and tax collection. However this decision was vetoed by Governor James Murtagh because he felt that Rome would be more convenient for business purposes and he preferred Utica as the new county seat. In 1929, the new county courthouse was completed and occupied by the courts until it burned down in 1974; however, the building still stands as a historical landmark today. In 1933, Ossining became home to America's first ever animation studio when Wernher von Braun's SSR Corporation set up shop there producing short films used to promote space exploration then being developed into feature films such as "Ender's Game" and "War of The Worlds". Productions stopped after World War II but continued sporadically through the 1950s before eventually ceasing completely in 1957; all future productions were done out of Los Angeles or other California locations thereafter During World War II over 100 families from Ossining worked at Valley Forge Naval Hospital which supplied food and clothing to servicemen overseas; afterwards many of these families moved back into their original homes while others returned briefly during peacetime to help rebuild war-torn areas postwar . In 1946 Valley Forge opened again as an army barracks housing personnel from Fort Drum whereupon many of those formerly living here also moved back into their homes .
