The Patchogue Pistol Club was organized in 1892 and has been a part of the community since that time. The club is named after Patchogue, New York, where it was founded. The pistol club is made up of individuals who live in or near Patchogue. In 1910, the first shooting competition was held at the local library. At that time, pistols were not allowed to be carried into libraries so this event was an important milestone for pistols in the community. Since then, many other competitions and events have been held at our library including: trap shoot, skeet hunt, rifle shoots (5–shot groups), target shooting (25-meter bulls-eye) and airsoft games. In 1969, the pistol club hosted its first annual meeting which resulted in approval of a bylaw making it illegal to carry handguns into any public building or meeting place without prior permission from the club president/chairman. This prohibition lasted until 1975 when a change to state law allowed concealed handgun permits to be granted on a case-by-case basis! Today we continue to hold meets at our library with various events like NRA gun shows as well as USPSA matches which are open to everyone!

Patchogue, New York is a small town in upstate New York located on the banks of the Hudson River. The population was 14,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now makes up Patchogue was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1614. By 1785, it had grown to include what is today Patchogue Village and parts of present-day Schenectady County. In 1801, when construction began on the Erie Canal through what is now Schenectady County, a group of men from Patchogue decided to move to new land along the canal and founded what would become Patchogue Village. The village became an incorporated town in 1824 under the name of Poughkeepsie. In 1836, during Aaron Burr's attempt to win presidential election as a Democrat against incumbent John Quincy Adams, he traveled to New York City and campaigned extensively in rural areas around Albany and Schenectady Counties. When he found out that his opponent had significant amounts of money invested in canals and other infrastructure projects throughout Upstate New York (then part of Massachusetts), Burr changed his affiliation to Republican and won the election by large margins in those areas. After being re-elected as president with more votes than Adams despite having less property worth owning due to raids by Federalists during this time period , Burr moved back east for good in 1848 and died two years later after living a life based largely on speculation instead of work or investment like most Americans did then or since). In 1850s–60s much development took place hereabouts including: passenger boat service on both sides of river; Lock & Dam #1 built; post office established hereon; first Baptist church organized hereon; first black person born hereon (Emmett Till); etc., while also Pottersville developed nearby which now contains many high school students studying there (andPatchogueVillage has long been popular among them). Patchogue, New York is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 5,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Patchogue was Nicholas Travilla on November 15, 1798. Travilla and his wife, Sarah Cowdin had been married just two days earlier and were living in the home of their relative John Dormer when they decided to move to what is now Patchogue Township. In 1802, Phebe Fenton purchased from Nicholas Travilla 2/5 of an acre (0.20 km²) of land for $50 which she donated to the village for use as a public square. In 1812-14, George Washington visited the town and took part in a hunt for deer on Caughnagheny Hill near present day Patchogue Avenue and Main Street (). In 1827-28 Reverend Nathaniel Hawthorne came to pastor the Congregational church in Patchogue Village while he was working as a missionary among the Mohawk Indians on Long Island (). After eight years of service there he returned to Massachusetts where he died on October 25th 1830 aged 58 years old. Reverend Hawthorne's body lay in state at First Congregational Church until January 6th 1833 when it was moved into its current location next door to Stonington Presbyterian Church because that building could not be used due to damage done by fire over twenty years before. Reverend Hawthorne's remains are buried in Section 12 of First Congregational Churchyard along with many others from that congregation who lost their lives during this time period including Drs Increase Mather and Timothy Dwight.
