Since then, Peekskill's coffee scene has exploded! There are now several cafes and restaurants serving delicious artisanal coffee all over the place (including our very own The Herbalist). Peekskill, New York is a town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. The town was founded in 1837 by Captain John Peekskill, who named it for his estate near Albany. It has since grown to be a small city with a population of around 100,000 people. Peekskill is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Albany and 2 miles (3 km) west of Kingston. The town's ZIP code is 11362. Peekskill's boundaries are 5th Street on the north side, Park Avenue on the south side, Hackensack Road on the east side and 3rd Street on the west side. The first settlers in what would become Peekskill were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. They built small houses along Fifth Avenue until they bought land from Sir George Clinton in 1701. In 1786, Colonel Abraham Van Cortlandt purchased 1,200 acres (500 ha) of land southeast of present-day Peekskill from Nicholas D’Alonzo and laid out a new settlement called Fort Orange at its headwaters. When he died in 1794 his son had him buried there and started building an obelisk to honor him as part of his fortification system against British attack during Queen’s War (1779–83). In 1818 Fort Orange was renamed Old Saratoga after General John Sullivan’s victory over Lord Howe at Saratoga Heights; however it reverted to its original name when Sullivan’s army moved into barracks within the fortifications itself following his victory over Howe atBull Run Bridge outside modern-day Peekskill late that year A post office called “Peekskill” was established at Fort Orange in 1827; it remained open until 1861 when it became part of Albany In 1830 Colonel Augustus Dearborn acquired 1,800 acres (600 ha) northeast of present-day Peekskill from Nicholas D’Alonzo and laid out another new settlements called Westville on its headwaters while keeping Fort Orange under military control . Dearborn also started construction on what would become today's Town Hall complex which was completed in 1835 adjacent to today's Main Street . This village would continue to grow until 1840 when Dearborn sold all but 8 sq mi (20 km2) including present day downtown to Edwin August Jacobs for $1 million After spending time living among Native Americans before leaving for good America during yellow fever pandemic1846–48Jacobsen imported 400 slaves from Africa who helped enriching white society through their labor
