Peekskill, New York is home to one of the oldest oceanographic museums in the country, and it has a rich marine gift history. The city was founded by Dutchmen in 1624 as an outpost on Long Island Sound, and its early maritime tradition can be seen in many of the objects that still grace Peekskill's downtown area today. One of the earliest examples of maritime gift history comes from Nathaniel Putnam, who donated three large crates of cannons to the city in 1775. From this episode in Peekskill's maritime history, we can learn much about how New York City came to have such a diverse collection of sea-related artifacts. One particularly noteworthy marine gift from Peekskill is the USS Constitution Museum's massive bronze plaque honoring America's first warship. The plaque was given to the museum by Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison in 1967 as part of a donation made after his death. This plaque is one of only two pieces ever awarded this distinction - the other being a bronzed statue depicting America's first female naval officer, Commodore Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Many other prominent Peekskill citizens also contributed to our city's maritime heritage over time. For example, Mayor Julius CaesarCoxe donated land for what is now Battery Park City in 1851; Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt gave $10,000 towards construction of what is now Grand Central Terminal in 1872; and Revolver Maker & Arms Dealer Jeremiah Dixon donated guns and pistols to Gertrude Stein’s personal collection at Adelson Museum (now known as The Met) in 1922. In addition, many local businesses were responsible for developing Peekskill into one of America’s leading seafood ports during its early years: the Dockside restaurant became well-known for their fresh catch and delicious lobster dishes; Commodore Vanderbilt’s yacht served as makeshift harbor headquarters during WWII; and John Lennon grew up eating fresh oysters from Great Lakes shrimp boats off Pier 82 near Battery Park City before he met Yoko Ono there!

Peekkill is located about 20 miles east of Albany on Route 9W between Seneca Lake and White Plains Junction Road. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1%, is water. As of 2010 census data, there were 12,500 people living within its borders: 6% black or African American; 33% Hispanic or Latino; 67% white alone; 3% Asian Pacific Islander

Peekskill, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the border of Saratoga and Putnam Counties and it was founded in 1811 by Nicholas Percival. The current population was 9,898 as of the 2010 census. Peekskill is one of the most affluent towns in Upstate New York. The first residents of Peekskill were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1764. They started a gristmill on the hamlet's riverbank and soon began to produce flour for local markets. In 1811, Nicholas Percival founded Peekskill Academy which became one of the most prestigious schools in Upstate New York. The school has been teaching students since 1792. In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt attended Peekskill Academy while he was attending Groton School near Danbury, Connecticut. After graduating from Groton he studied law at Yale Law School before being elected president in 1912 and serving until 1913. During his time at Yale he met Alice Paul and they began dating; they married two years later on May 15th, 1915 at White Plains Register House with Reverend John Witherspoon officiating. Percival Elementary School was built in 1909-10 as part of a larger public works project that included improved transportation links between Saratoga Springs (then called Westchester County) and Schenectady (then part of Albany). Designed by architect Edward Haggerty Jr., it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire six months earlier. Today,Percy Ladd Elementary School continues to serve as the primary educational institution for students from grades K-12in Peekskill Township outside Of Albany Borough limits
