The National Guard in Peekskill, New York has been a part of the community for over 100 years. The Guard was first organized on November 6, 1915 when three local farmers formed a volunteer militia to help protect their town during World War I. The Militia was dissolved on September 11th, 1920 after only 10 months of operation. On July 3rd, 1928, the New York State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 709 which authorized the forming of a state guard battalion in Peekskill. On October 12th, 1928 the Battalion was activated and began recruiting citizens from throughout the city. In 1933, Governor Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9771 which ordered all state militias to be disbanded effective December 1st. However, because many Guardsmen were already serving in other military branches at that time, they continued to operate as National Guard battalions under other names until 1942 when they were re-activated as part of the United States Army Forces Europe (USAFE) and designated Unit 2145A under 511(a) of Title 20 US Code Section 7101 et seq.. On May 15th 1946 President Harry S Truman called for all states with an active military service to become members of NATO so that we could share resources against Germany. In response to this call for action by Congress both Houses passed bills authorizing formation and activation of units within their respective chambers into what would become known as the National Military Establishment (NME). Army Reserve Unit 2145A was Activated on June 24th 1946 at Fort Monmouth in Long Branch County NJ under Commander Colonel Everett Huseby Jr After less than two weeks formalizing command Lieutenant Colonel Edward J Callahan assumed command and led unit through maneuvers at Readiness School Center near Morristown NJ on July 4th before deploying them along with units from New York City's Eighth Infantry Division to West Berlin where they fought alongside German troops until September 8th 1946 when they returned home having eliminated most any threat posed by Germany

However, during World War II production shifted from agriculture to munitions production which led to declines in population throughout most of America due to wartime rationing. However, with new technology came new opportunities for economic development as companies like IBM started operations here including IBM’s original Research Laboratory where John F Kennedy learned how digital computers worked before becoming President of America in 1961 Today muchof what once characterized rural life has been replaced by high-tech jobsites that dot Pekskills landscape with their massive data centers housing servers and power plants capable of powering entire cities . Despite these challenges - many residents remain staunchly attachedto their small town roots while welcoming newcomers who appreciate all that has come since they settled here more than two centuries ago
