Plattsburgh is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Mohawk word "Pleasant Valley". The first settlers in what is now Plattsburgh were two brothers who entered the area in 1685. They named their new land "Pleasant Valley" after a valley they had seen on their journey up the Mohawk River. In 1784, Captain Jonathan Gouverneur Morris and his family built a house on the bluff overlooking Pleasant Valley. They continued to live there until 1814 when they sold their land to Nicholas Douglass. The town was incorporated on April 15, 1825 and began growth quickly. By 1830 it had a population of around 1,000 people and began to build its own infrastructure such as schools and churches. By 1840 it had reached 5,000 people and started developing into what it is today with its wide variety of businesses and attractions. By 1825, Plattsburgh had become an important city with a population of around 30 residents; however, it struggled during the Panic of 1837 which caused economic hardship throughout much of New York State. During World War II (1939-1945), Plattsburg played an important role as a naval base supplying Allied troops with supplies and munitions during Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion). After hostilities ended in 1945, many local businesses closed down due to unstable post-war markets; however, some did manage to reopened following reconstruction efforts spearheaded by Mayor Harry Saperstein Jr.. Today, Plattsburgh remains an important center for trade and commerce within New York State - both locally and nationally - thanks in part to its rich history and cultural attractions.
