Plattsburgh is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Plattsburgh was Giovanni da Verrazzano on July 4, 1524. Captain John Smith also visited in 1608 and 1610. In 1765 the Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War and made Plattsburgh under British control. In 1814 the US acquired it from Britain as part of the Compromise of 1814. It became a town on February 14, 1825. The Erie Canal passed through Plattsburgh in 1825 and 1829–30; when it was completed its builders commemorated it by erecting a toll bridge over the canal between Plattsburgh and Rome (now Utica). The tolls were abolished by an act of Congress in 1865; but they were re-established in 1935 for use by farmers along the route of the new Champlain Bridge over Lake Ontario north of Plattsburgh. During World War II, war production led to increased demand for goods produced in Plattsburgh including lumber, cotton textiles, shoes and other items. After Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7th 1941 American forces began to move inland towards New York City with many troops stationed at Camp Upton before being sent northward towards Canada where they would join up with Canadian forces fighting against Japan On January 8th 1942 Japanese submarines torpedoed USS "Hinomaru" while anchored off ashore near Naples Italy killing all 20 crew members including 5 officersCommanding Officer Ensign Kondo Iwamura Commander Lieutenant Commander Hitoshi Yamazaki Second Lieutenants Takeo Fukuda Chief Engineer Tadaaki Shimamoto FirstLieutenant Minoru Murata Seaman 2nd Lieutenant Shigeru Nagai petty officer 1st Class Masataka Wakatsuki . On September 3rd 1945 USS "Hinomaru" struck an iceberg 66 miles southwesterly of Cape Cod USA on Asiatic Unit Carrier task unit "Saratoga". All hands lost their lives except for Commodore Isoroku Yamamoto who remained afloat until he capsized about 350 miles northwesterly off Long Island Sound aboard another American warship soon afterwards.. his body has never been found however his effects are still being searched

The town was named for General George Washington, who arrived in 1777 to campaign against the French and British in what is now upstate New York. The first settler in Plattsburgh was John Sutter, who claimed land on the east side of Lake Ontario. By 1818, the population of Plattsburgh had grown to about 140 people. In 1820, the village was renamed for General Lafayette because he had been one of America's earliest military heroes.
