Plattsburgh, New York is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 8,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Plattsburgh were French traders and missionaries who came in 1624 as part of the Jesuit mission sent by Pope Paul V. The Jesuits built a small fort on what is now Route 10 near the present-day city limits of Plattsburgh. A larger fort was built about 1790 on land that now forms most of the eastern edge of downtown Plattsburgh. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's military expedition against Native Americans destroyed much of Fort George on Lake Champlain and laid waste to Plattsburg; but Jackson's troops stopped at what is now Main Street and occupied an old trading post known as "The Jackal Neck". American forces burned down both forts in 1815 during the War of 1812 although they did not damage Fort George which still stands today. In 1827, President James K. Polk designated Plattsburgh as site for a new national capital after he became president following Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration that year. On December 4, 1928, Congress passed an act designating Broome Street (now Clinton Street) as Constitution Avenue within the new District of Columbia; and this act also made Washington Heights within City Limits platted adjacent to what is nowи Suburban Village east/west of Third Avenue in DowntownPlattsburgh along with most immediately adjoining streets including Fifth Avenue between Broadway and Grand Avenue northeast from Third Avenue thence south to Clinton Street thence westwardly along said Streets until it intersects with Third Avenue outside city limits - all platted together forming what are today called "Downtown" or "The Oldtown" district bounded north by Broome Street east/west across Clinton Street from First Avenue inclusive bordering Sixth Avenue northeast from First avenue thence southwardly along said Streets until it meets With said avenues outside city limits: thus transforming one immense block into two or three blocks surrounded by high walls enclosing an area extending beyond any municipal boundaries... Plattsburgh is a city in the United States, located on the Hudson River. The population was 54,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of New York City. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Plattsburgh was made by Dutch colonists in 1624. The town was named after Vice Admiral George Platt, who had been killed while fighting against Spanish forces during the Dutch-Spanish War. By 1785, Plattsburgh had a population of 3,000 people and was one of five towns chartering the Village of Plattsburgh (later renamed Town of Clinton) on July 20 of that year. During World War II, Plattsburgh played an important role as a naval base for Allied bomber aircraft and submarines engaged in strategic raids against Nazi Germany and Japan. In 1945, following World War II, it became known as "The most bombed city in America." In recent years, Plattsburgh has become a center for technology industry with many high-tech companies based there including Intel and AMD. The post-Civil War era in Plattsburgh was marked by a number of changes. The town's first white settler, James Platt, arrived in 1835 and founded the village of Plattsburgh on the east bank of the St. Lawrence River. In 1867, after years of discussion, the town voted to become a city. The consolidation process took place over several years and resulted in plats for two downtown areas - one centered around Main Street and Second Avenue and populated by businesses such as grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and churches; and the other located on what is now West Third Street between Clinton Avenue and Park Avenue - home to government buildings including City Hall (1868), the Post Office (1872), Mayor's office (1875-79), fire stations (1884-92), an insurance company building (1907), as well as many residential properties. During Reconstruction Era Plattsburgh experienced some growth but also faced significant challenges. For example, black citizens were not allowed to vote until 1870 and so did not have any say in local government affairs. This led to tension between whites and African Americans which continued into the 20th century. In 1932, violence erupted following racial tensions that had been growing since Plattsburgh began its integration into New York City's public school system seven years earlier
