Port Chester, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern tip of Long Island. The population was 11,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in Port Chester were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and named it "Poldershurg". The first British colonists, who landed in 1664, called it "New Netherland". In 1821, when the United States acquired Canada, Port Chester became part of the new country and was renamed after President James K. Polk's home state of Iowa – "Iowa City" until its incorporation into New York as a city in 1898. The town was originally built on land that had been purchased by John Dyer from Native Americans for $1 per acre (in 1684). Dyer founded what is now called Dyer's Harbor on what is now known as Dock Road near where he built his house and store. He also erected a wharf on what are now Benefit Street and Main Street to provide access to his cargo ships docking at his harbor. By 1750, Port Chester had reached its current size with a population of 100 people and consisted mostly of farmers and their families living along Dock Road and Benefit Street between East Main Street and South Main Street. During the Revolutionary War (1775-1787), General George Washington visited Port Chester twice: once while leading an army through central Long Island during winter quarters nearby at Old Bridge; again when crossing over Connecticut River into New York during his campaign against Great Britain in 1781–83. Afterward many soldiers took up residence in this small community before returning home or moving out to other parts of North America. In 1802, Nathaniel Greene purchased part of Denton's land which became the town of Port Chester. The first school in what is now Portchester Township was organized in 1812 by Rev. John Greenough (later Bishop) under instruction from General Canning during his stay in America; it operated until 1827 when it moved to Freeport on Long Island due to overcrowding within the new township. During its early years, Port Chester was primarily agricultural with significant residential development taking place only after World War I when more people began moving into New York state because of industrial growth around Buffalo and other cities across America.
