Port Chester is a village in the town of Chester, New York, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. Port Chester is on Long Island Sound and bordered bySayville to the east, Hicksville to the north, and Farmingdale to the west. It lies within the Town of Chester. The first Europeans to visit what is now Portchester were Dutch traders in 1624. The village was founded in 1763 by Loyalists who had fled from British rule during the American Revolution. In 1815, when Webster's Treaty ended war between Great Britain and America, all of Long Island became part of America. As a result of this treaty, most Native Americans living on Long Island were removed and replaced by settlers from elsewhere on New York mainland. In 1868-69, an effort was made to improve communications between Sayville and Hicksville through construction of a road called "the Chain" or "The Connector." This road improved trade between these villages and opened up new opportunities for industry in both towns. The first store in Hicksville opened its doors in 1870; however, it wasn't until 1886 that a brick depot was built at Portchester proper; this depot served as a shipping point for goods coming into town from outlying areas such as Sayville and Farmingdale. Today Portchester has one primary industry: agriculture which includes raising beef cattle, poultry (chicken/egg), pigs/poultry production., corn cribbing (maize), haymaking (livestock), canning (applesauce) & vegetables (cucumbers). There are also several small businesses including two art galleries which have been operating since 1994-1995; one focusing on traditional artistry while another specializes in contemporary arts photography etc., as well as two restaurants serving local cuisine with views of Southampton Bay; both located adjacent to an outdoor amphitheater which hosts concerts throughout the year as well as community events such as softball games etc.. In terms of transportation there are three stops along Route 9: at Bedford Junction where you reach Interstate 95 just south of Kingston; then past Huntington Station continuing northeast towards Peekskill Junction before turning southeast towards SayVILLE where you reach Route 9 again just south of Seaford Village;; finally terminating at Exit 11A off I-95 near Hawthorne Manor
