As passenger boats decreased in popularity during the 19th century, industry began to take over; shipyards were built along both sides of Canalside Drive (now Main Street) between 1835 and 1870; steelmaking began operations near Union Terminal around 1850; brick making started upriver in what is now Northport; and much of today's commercial activity takes place along Canalside Drive which has also become known as "The Strip." Port Chester is one of the most picturesque villages in all of upstate New York and it is also one of the most developed towns in the county. The history of Port Chester begins with Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and named their new settlement after their hometown of Rotterdam, Netherlands. They quickly realized that they would need to portage around extensive hills to get to the sea and so they built a small harbor on an arm of Lake Ontario. It wasn't until 1786 that a more permanent waterway was created when navigation improved from sailing vessels to steamboats. In 1814, American General George Clinton decided to make this area his winter headquarters for his campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte and moved his army from Albany to Buffalo. He founded what would become known as Fort Clinton on October 14th, 1814. This fort served as a base for operations during the war and also housed several thousand soldiers during its duration. The Battle of Mohawk took place at Fort Clinton on September 17th, 1817 which resulted in British General John Burgoyne being captured by American forces and ultimately surrendering at Saratoga Springs two days later (the battle is sometimes referred to as "the final victory" for the Americans). During Prohibition era (1918-1933), Port Chester made headlines due to its large production facilities for bootlegging alcohol which led to its nickname "The Hottest Town In America". However, today Portchester has done quite well economically since repeal began allowing residents access to high-quality education opportunities without relying on illegal activity/.
