The National Guard of Port Chester, New York was a unit in the United States Army during World War II. The unit was first organized on October 1, 1942 and served as an armory reserve force until 1945. The National Guard of Port Chester has been present in town since 1892 when it was known as the New York State Militia. On September 30, 1907, the militia became the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment American Volunteer Infantry. In 1916, this regiment was redesignated as the 5th Regiment (New York) American Volunteer Infantry and served in World War I under then-President Woodrow Wilson. In 1935, the battalion became part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of 4th Infantry Division which served in World War II with distinction under then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. After Pearl Harbor, both battalions were reassigned to active duty with Headquarters Battery Company A serving at Camp Upton and Headquarters Battery Company B stationed at Brunswick Barracks on Long Island Sound while also providing support for Troop KAtheropsis located at San Diego Naval Air Station where they trained bomber pilots before being ordered back to Manchuria to bomb Japan from bases there starting on December 7th 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor but before they could hit their target; KAtheropsis bombed Hiroshima only two days later starting what is now known as "The atomic bombing." On June 10, 1947 elements of First Battalion (New York) New York State Militia left for service with The United Nations following Operation Crossroads which led to Korean War armistice; these troops returned home on July 12th 1947 having completed 333 days service in country going from November 9th 1946 through May 15th 1948 inclusive; they had also killed over 100 enemy military personnel while training with UN forces in China prior to their deployment there.

Port Chester, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, about 12 miles (19 km) north of the city of Buffalo. The population was 23,887 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Port Chester were typesetters and printers working for the John D. Rockefeller Company in 1837-38. In 1847, Robert H. Schuyler bought 5 acres (20 ha) of land on the south side of Cayuga Creek which became known as "Fort Schuyler". He named it after his friend and mentor, General James Wilkinson Schuyler who had been U.S. Minister to Russia from 1840-1845 and later served as Ambassador to Great Britain and France before becoming Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson in 1865-1868. The town site was laid out by George Stephenson in 1851 as part of a trade route between Buffalo and Cleveland that followed the Niagara River valley from Lake Ontario eastward through Canandaigua County into Erie County; Stephenson's company built a toll bridge over Cayuga Creek near present day downtown Port Chester in 1853. By 1860, there were 21 houses with a population of 100; the railroad arrived two years later bringing more people and businesses to town which began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century thanks in part to heavy investment by several merchant families including those of J.P. Morgan & Co., Citizens National Bank & Trust Company, Guaranty Life Insurance Company, Albany Glass Works Inc., Fidelity Loan Corporation and others who developed major industries such as textiles ( notions coming mainly from Canada), shipbuilding (vessels being built at Lockport Shipbuilding Company), engineering (the construction industry), paper products ( mills manufacturing straw hats), baking powder production and other agricultural products until World War I when coal replaced textile production as the mainstay of local industry In 1886, following prohibitionist sentiment at home due to increased anti-alcoholism sentiment abroad via programs such asdrunken driving laws initially implemented by President Grover Cleveland pursuant to his campaign promise made during his inaugural address the Ohio Legislature enacted an act providing for retail sales only within 500 feet (150 m) of any public building or office rather than allowing personal consumption inside restaurants closed for business purposes this measure effectively banned most types of bar habitually frequented by locals such as cafes which continued open but sold food outside while taverns stopped serving alcohol altogether thereby helping preserve many small businesses that did not have space or customers elsewhere further prohibitionist sentiment led numerous municipalities throughout Ohio throughout 1916-'17 when national prohibition ended effective January 1st making port towns like Toledo/Canton their new legal exceptions thus rendering them stateless overnight giving rise to various derogatory terms such as ' municipal freehold' still used today among some residents thereof
