Poughkeepsie, New York is a small town in upstate New York, about an hour's drive from Albany. It is the seat of Dutchess County and is the largest city within its boundaries. The population was 25,869 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie has a rich history dating back to 1777 when it was part of the Mohawk nation and was known as Haudenosaunee (pronounced "HAY-doh-nuhs-tuh"). The name Poughkeepsie derives from two words: "poo" meaning hogshead or barrel and "keep" meaning safe place. The area now known as Poughkeepsie was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as part of the Great Lakes region. At that time, it consisted of only a few scattered settlements along the north shore of Lake Ontario. For many years, Poughkeepsie remained an agricultural village with limited industry or commerce. However, during World War II, Poughkeepsie became one of the most important military sites on Long Island because it played a significant role in providing munitions for American forces involved in World War II. After the war ended, however, industrial development took hold and Poughkeepsesie experienced rapid growth in businesses such as electronics manufacturing and healthcare services. Today, POUGHKEEPZIE still retains many traditional values such as its strict zoning laws which protect its young people from gangs and prostitution; its close relationship with Albany; and its strong sense of community spirit which helps to support local businesses
In the early 1940s, the United States Air Force had a small but growing unit of helicopters. The first helicopter squadron was activated in 1941 and operated Curtiss R-4A Hawk reconnaissance aircraft. In 1942, the USAF organized two squadrons of Bell Model H1A helicopters, which were used for airlift and disaster relief. On 8 December 1943, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg ordered all American Helicopter Service units to be activated into an operational flying arm known as the First Air Forces (FAF). The Second Air Force was also activated into FAF on 1 January 1944. Both wings were headquartered at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. On 15 March 1944, Second Air Force activated flying training squadron No. 4151 at RAF Wetherby in England to provide instruction to newly received helicopter pilots from USAAF fighter groups located in Europe and North Africa. The first postwar gift ever given by the United States Army to the USAF was an M-46D helicopter flown by Major General Harry Crippen from Strategic Reserve Group 3 at Offutt AFB on 12 September 1946 as part of Operation Crossroads I within Tactical Air Command (TAC) with headquarters at Louisville Airport near Louisville Kentucky and Twelfth Wing Headquarters at Tan Son Nhut ABThere were two types of helicopters: fixed-wing aircraft such as piston engines powered rotorcraft (the Sikorsky H42S), or fan-powered rotarycraft using principles developed during World War II experience with VTOL technology (the Bell Model H1A). As with other aspects of military aviation during this period; both types were used extensively throughout 1946 and 1947 before being phased out starting in 1948 when jet aircraft became available

Poughkeepsie, New York is a town in the U.S. state of New York and is located on the Mohawk River. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie has been an important commercial center since its founding in 1777 as part of the British colonies of Ulster and New York. It became a city in 1898 and remains one of the most populous cities in New York State today with over 50,000 residents. The first Europeans to visit what is now Poughkeepsie were French missionaries who landed on Long Island in 1609/10. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette explored parts of what is now central New York in 1614-1615 while looking for a route to Mexico City through present-day Ontario and up the Hudson River Valley. He noted that there was “a great plain” east of Lake George where he thought traders might establish a post if they could find an open water passage between Lakes Champlain and Georges River. The area around Poughkeepsie would come to be known as Indian Stringers because so many Native American settlements had been clustered around this key trade artery during early colonial times (see also Cattaraugus)]. The Dutch founded Fort Orange on Governors Island (now Governors Park) opposite Albany in 1624 after their victory over Spanish forces at Saratoga Creek; this was followed by English settlement beginning about 1627 by Puritans from Connecticut who called themselves Captains John Winthrop's Men or "the Pilgrims." In 1638, Captain Anthony Mundy built Fort Nassau on what is now Old South Rd., across frompresent-day Central Square (then called Centerville). This was followed by several more English forts until about 1660 when all but one were surrendered to Native Americans under Governor Robert Livingston'sorders following his expedition against the Iroquois Confederacy led by Chief Wyandotte}. About this time, large numbers of Westchester County people living near Otteryville started settling here because they could get no food nearbyprocured from farther away along the Mohawk River belt including Albany, Schenectady, Kingston, Yonkers... Nearby paddy fields enabled farmers to produce corn instead of wheat or rye which took months or even weeks to arrive at marketplaces like Utica or Tarrytown.. Although Indian hostilities continued into early modern times some trading relationships did form between local Ottawas and Wabanakis starting about 1600AD...] In 1777 Poughkeepsie became part of British America when it joined Province of Ulster; then it became part of Kings County 2 years later when that county was combined with Queens County].
