The project is a research and educational initiative of the Marines’ Museum of Art located at Marine Barracks, Attleboro, Massachusetts. The museum provides education and artifact access to Marines stationed in New England, as well as the nation-wide deploys. Poughkeepsie is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of Syracuse. The population was 12,815 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie is the largest community in Dutchess County and one of the most populous towns in New York State. The first settled area in what became Poughkeepsie was on Notch Creek near present-day Westchester County line. The creek's name may derive from an Algonquian word meaning "to turn away from." By 1814, however, the area around Poughkeepsie had become largely agricultural and many people were already aware of its potential as a commercial center due to its location within easy access of Central Railroad of New York (CAL) lines and other transportation hubs. In 1824, Cadwalader&Hicks warehouses were built on Union Street in downtown Poughkeepsie to serve as a base for manufacturing goods destined for eastern markets. In 1828, Nicholas Fenton purchased Lots 1-6 East Main Street from Jonas Snyders and laid out a village called "Fentonburgh" which included148 lots measuring 3 rods wide by 2 rods deep with dimensions that would still be used today including: two streets running north-south; four blocks long; three features per block (a square millstone or blacksmith shop, storehouse and church); 16 acres (70 hectares) of open land west of the river; one hundred fifty five horses; 15 men; six wagons; seven cows
