The team has won three NHL championships, and has appeared in six Stanley Cup Finals. The team's history dates back to 1926 when they founded the American Hockey League (AHL) as a regional league. They joined the NHL in 1972 as an expansion team. In their first championship season, they defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in the Stanley Cup Finals.
