The Rochester, New York Air Force Base is home to the 388th Wing. The 388th Wing was activated on October 24, 1947 at Beech Grove Army Air Field as the 3672d Bombardment Squadron. It was redesignated as the 388th Bombardment Wing on November 1, 1948 and activated at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio on December 15, 1948. The wing's first combat mission was flown from Guam in July of 1951 when it supported Operation "Crossroads" during the Korean War. On August 20, 1952, a Boeing 717 airliner carrying personnel and supplies crashed into an airfield near Daegu killing all sixteen people aboard. This event helped turn Wright-Patterson AFB into one of America's leading bomber bases. On May 1, 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced plans to reorganize USAAF and create five wings under his newly created National Security Council program known as Project RAND which would lead to the creation of the 388th Bombardment Wing on October 24 at Rochester AFB. The wing received its initial equipment fromaughlin Air Force Base TX whereupon it began operations with Republic F-4 Phantom IIs assigned to 3d Tactical Fighter Squadron (3TFS). The 389th BW flew its first operational mission over North Vietnam on January 12, 1957 flying both strategic bombing raids against targets in Hanoi while also conducting ground support operations such as providing artillery fires for unit maneuvers and supplying troops during the Tet Offensive in 1968 which resulted in heavy casualties among American forces within South Vietnam. Inactivated on September 30 1985 due to budget cuts however reactivated againon February 10 1990 with Republic F-15 Eagle aircraft assigned to 16TFS becoming part of III Bomber Command - part of Twentieth Air Force - effective April 1990 until permanent closure of Fort Worth AAFeffective June 30 1994 after 431 years active duty (1946-1994) with 388 BW; this represents only one instance where an existing USAF base has been used by two different wings simultaneously; other past examples include: Beech Grove Army Air Field (renamed Wright-Patterson AFB), Ohio became Fairchild AFB CA then Vandenberg AFB CA before finally being closed for good on July 6 2002 by United States Congress effective September 9 2002 concurrent with global reallocation of USAF resources resulting in closures of most major USAF installations worldwide including Beech Grove Army Air Field (renamed Wright-Patterson AFB), OH being turned over to local control and eventual demolition) .

The Superfortresses served as bombers and escort fighters during their deployments across India and Pakistan. These planes were also used by American servicemen stationed at RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus for airstrikes against Syrian targets. In 1990, the Air Force bestowed its third Boeing B-2 Spirit Bomber onto Japan in order to support their war effort against Saddam Hussein's Iraq. The bombers were used to carry out airstrikes throughout Iraqi territory and along its coastline. On July 16, 1786, Battle of Rochestersville took place when British forces under Colonel Nicholas Gorham attacked American settlers led by Captain John Spencer at Kodakanoke Lake while they were harvesting wild rice. The battle ended with a British victory and no casualties on either side
