Rochester is a city in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 83,735 at the 2010 census. It is the third-most populous city in New York State after New York City and Syracuse. A trading post on the Genesee River in 1814 led to Rochester's founding as an agricultural settlement by Adam Tompkins and others. In 1837, construction began on what would become Oneida University and it opened its doors on October 16th that year. During World War II, Rochester played an important role as an airbase for Allied forces operating in Europe. The Battle of Okinawa was fought here between U.S., Japanese and Commonwealth forces during World War II; though many civilian casualties occurred due to bombing raids conducted by American bombers over Japan (the atomic bombing of Hiroshima also took place nearby), this battle has been most prominently remembered for Sgt John McCain's sacrifice as a Navy pilot leading Operation Crossbow which targeted military targets inside Japan
