The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Collection is a unique and valuable resource for Marines and their families. The Collection began with donations from the Marines of Rochester, New York in 1998. Since then, it has grown steadily, with contributions from all over the United States. Rochester, New York is a city located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 581,722 at the 2010 census. The name Rochester comes from Roman Rochester, which means "Rochester on the river." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Rochester were French traders and missionaries who came through the area in 1624-25. They named their new town after François de La Salle, Sieur de la Salle's lieutenant general and commander of Canada. La Salle had been exploring North America for France when he discovered the Niagara River Valley in 1689-90 and decided to establish a trading post there. He named his new settlement after himself. In 1701, General Peter Minuit founded the towns of Hamburg and Batavia (now Jakarta), East Timor (then Dutch East Indies), and Rochelle on Long Island Sound to serve as commercial ports on the Great Lakes. These settlements represented an important advance for western New York because they enabled early colonists to trade with Europe directly rather than going through Albany or Buffalo. The first settler in what is now Rochester was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1736. Nicholson built a log cabin near present day Main Street and called it Rensselaer Falls. He was followed by James Wright who built another cabin soon afterwards on land that would become Park Avenue today. In 1740, Nicholas Negus settled near Park Avenue and developed what is now downtown Rochester into a thriving business district that included several warehouses, two stores, three churches, four schools—one for girls—and two banks. By 1800, much of this original downtown had been replaced by high-rise buildings housing businesses such as breweries and distilleries as well as residences such as homes for wealthy merchants and their families). In 1814 Anthony Robbins purchased part of Fayetteville Township from Nicholas Negus for $2 per acre (the price has changed over time but averaged about $207 per acre at its peak). Robbins proceeded to build one of the largest batteries of artillery ever constructed – called Fort Orange – within easy walking distance of where he lived at 317 Main Street between Clinton Street and Church Avenue today! This battery became famous throughout west central New York due to its effectiveness during the War of 1812 against British forces led by Sir George Prevost
