The Rockville Centre National Guard is a force that has been around in the area for over 100 years. The unit was first organized on October 25, 1892 when five local militiamen from Rockville Centre formed the 1st Regiment of New York Militia. There were only 15 members in the regiment at its inception, but it grew quickly and by 1895 had become part of the New York State militia. In 1917, the 1st Regiment of New York Militia was redesignated as the 9th Regiment of New York State Militia and became a national guard unit under President Woodrow Wilson. The 9th Regiment served as part of World War I until 1919 when it was mustered out. After World War I, the regiment again reformed and became part of brigades under Lieutenant Colonel John J. McCloy who served as Commanding Officer from 1921 until his retirement in 1941. In 1945, Brigadier General James A. Garfield ordered all state militias to be disbanded and all personnel assigned to duty with the United States military forces or called into service for six months or less due to Korea tensions. The 1 st Regiment of NYMG re-formed on April 5, 1946 as an elementof 4 th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) stationed at Fort Drum barracks in Kingston upon Hull NY which included elements from two other regiments also housed there such as 3 rd Battalion (Norman Mailer), 71 st Field Artillery brigade and 2 nd Battalion ( motto: Voluntarily Put On) 161st Field Artillery brigade which were both mobilized units activated for deployment in Europe during World War II including battalion headquarters which arrived at Casablanca Airport on January 17th 1942 company HQs arrived at Marseilles Airport May 10th 1942 Company Headquarters moved to Trier June 8th 1942 Companies landed at Normandy September 28th 1944 Troop Carrier Service Wounded Badge Ceremony December 7th 1944 Hereafter Known As "The Red Devils" In 1957 Major General John Prentice ordered all state militias reinstated effective July 1st with full rank insignia same date Of Retirement From Army Reserve active duty status On November 14 th 1957 First Lt Charles Denton assumed command And Headquarters At Uncasville NY Withdrawn From Army Reserve Active Duty Status Effective November 15 th 1959 And All Personnel Assigned To Duty With U S Military Forces Or Called Into Service For Six Months Or Less Began To Serve Under Major General Clifford Cushing Who Held That Office Until His Retirement On January 13 th 1960 Second Lieutenant William Fortunato assumed Command And Headquarters At AlbanyNY Withdrawn From Army Reserve Active Duty Status Effective January 14 th 1960 First Sergeant Josephine Vesey CommandsHQ & Troop Carrier Service Wounded Badge Ceremony February 20 th 1960 HereafterKnown As "The White Devils"

During World War I (1914-1918), both federal military forces and state militias were called into service by President Wilson as part of his emergency wartime powers. After World War I ended, similar wartime powers were exercised by Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt (1929-1945) and Harry Truman (1946-1953). In 1951, President Dwight Eisenhower established a permanent National Guard Bureau which led to increased recruitment throughout America for future peacetime emergencies. Since then, patriotic donations have continued unabated as soldiers and civilians alike come together to provide support for our nation during times of peace or crisis. Rockville Centre is a town in Rockville Centre County, New York, United States. The population was 5,000 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Rockville Centre and the fifth-largest municipality in Rockville Centre County. The first permanent settler of what would become Rockville Centre was Nicholas Montresor, who arrived in 1784. He set up a farm on the present site of Main Street and Washington Avenue. In 1804, Isaac Parker bought Montresor's farm from him and changed its name to "Rockville Center." The town was incorporated as a village on April 12, 1824. In 1830, John Fenton founded the Townshend Iron Works on Factory Road near what is now Park Boulevard. His works produced cannons for the American Revolution and later for both World Wars I and II. The company closed its doors in 1951 but it has been resurrected several times including as an agricultural co-operative called Fenton Farms since 1978. The post office at 2133 Main Street opened on October 14, 1847; it was renamed "Rockville Centre" on January 1, 1903; and became part of US Postal Service District 3 upon districtization that took effect in 1968. A fire destroyed most of downtown business buildings on May 4th 1923 which caused great damage to many businesses; however all reopened within two weeks due to insurance money provided by Fire Insurance Company NYC & Beyond which had also lost property during the disaster
