City Tactical coffee history in Rome, New York City began with the first coffeehouses on lower Broadway in 1824. The first two were run by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother Giovanni. They served Dutch coffee, which was popular at the time because it was light and refreshing. In 1827, a Dutchman named Cornelius Vanderbilt started buying shares of the business and opened his own shop on Broadway called The Commodore. It became one of the most successfulcoffeehouses in America. In 1829, Italian immigrants Luigi and Pietro Maggi established a cafe on Mercer Street near Trinity Church. They served Italian coffee until 1840 when they moved to 22nd Street and Second Avenue where they founded their own café, La Caravelle (The Star). This café was also one of the most successful in America because it offered high quality coffee and excellent service. In 1837, Nicholas-Jacques Conte reopened his original brick building at 4th Avenue and 23rd Street as The French Coffee House. He continued serving excellent French coffee until he died in 1861. His son Giovanni took over the business after him and kept it running until 1886 when he sold it to George Fenton who operated it for fifteen years before selling it to Julius Nystrom who operated it from 1935 to 1945 before it was taken over by Harry Ziegler who ran it from 1945 to 1957 before being bought by Donnelley Brothers who operates today under the name Donnelley Coffee Corporation Italian immigrant Luigi Maggi opened a cafe on Third Avenue between East 24th Street and East 25th Streets in 1907 which became known as Il Ristorante Maggi (The Maggis restaurant). It became one of America's most popular restaurants because of its delicious food and great service. In 1938, Mario Batali founded what is now Santo Stefano Restaurant & Cafe on Riverside Boulevard just north of Central Park South which became famous for its Neapolitan cuisine items such as pizza, pastas, antipasti etc.. He eventually sold his interest in Santo Stefano to Federico Pezzulli who opened il Castelnuovo (Castle Nuovo) across Lexington Avenue from Central Park South in 1951 which became one of New York's most famous cafes
