It is difficult to overestimate the role that the United States Air Force has played in Saratoga Springs, New York. The community was founded on April 15, 1913 as an airfield for the newly formed 3rd District of New York Army National Guard. The first military unit to arrive was a detachment of 26 airplanes fromoth Air Service Squadron 2 at Elkhorn Field in Buffalo, New York on May 3, 1913. By 1916, Saratoga had become home to two large military airports: Elmira and Roswell Army Air Base. In 1917, America's entry into World War I led to an increase in air activity in and around the town. On December 12th of that year (1917), the 3rd District activated its 1st Aero Squadron at Elmira Airport with 16 Curtiss P-10s and six Nieuport Type A fighters. The squadron flew patrols over German positions during early 1918. On July 14th of 1918 (the day after America entered World War I), Headquarters Third Army charged First Lieutenant John Fenton with procurement and erection of a hangar at Roswell Army Air Base for American planes based there. This marked the beginning of what would be an extended relationship between Third Army and Roswell AFB; both units would play significant roles in post-war aviation policymaking. In 1933, General Curtis LeMay took command of Eighth Air Force which became known as "The Flying Fortress" organization due to its strategic importance within the war effort against Nazi Germany; Eighth AF would serve as Donald Ewart Cameron's final campaign headquarters before his death in 1942 At Roswell AFB during Operation Overlord on September 10th 1945 it was announced by General George C Marshall that all Allied forces were going home - Seventh AF had been disbanded less than two months earlier! Saratoga Springs, New York is a small town in Upstate New York. The population was 5,849 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Saratoga County and the home of The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The Town of Saratoga sprang up on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Saratoga Springs when people who lived near Lake George started buying land to build homes in 1828. The first settlers were white men from Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine who bought 120 acres (48 ha) around what is now Third and Fifth Streets NW. A mill was built on the stream that flows through downtown by 1830 and soon people were trading goods with other towns in this area for flour, soap, salt and other minerals that would be used to make paper products like textiles or footwear. By 1835 there were nine houses in downtown including four belonging to named proprietors: Wm Hays (1811-1875), David Rumsey (1785-1863), Amos Eaton (1796-1865), Timothy Dwight (1795-1868) The town rapidly grew thanks to its location near two water sources – one supplying water for mills downriver while another provided access to springs that gave Saratoga Springs its name Water became an important commodity as transportation improved with canal construction starting around 1800 In 1851 the first post office opened in downtown; it continued being served until 1893 Downtown business got a boost when entrepreneur James Buchanan Key opened the first hotel west of Pennsylvania in 1865 By 1870 there were twenty businesses open along Third Street NW with twelve chaired by men including Key himself In 1876 oil was discovered onshore at nearby Utica Hill just northeast of downtown . Businesses quickly grew associated with production and shipping operations beginning with a chemical factory opened in 1880 called White Sulphur Works which produced sulphur dioxide for fertilizers etc In 1886 electric lights replaced gaslights which helped drive development along 3rd Street NW

The history of the gift-giving process within the USAF has always been complex, with a variety of organizations and individuals contributing to the gifting tradition. This paper will cover some of the most significant air force gifts in recent history. One of the earliest examples of an air force gift was given by General Edward "Bull" Smith on December 1, 1942. Smith bestowed aupon Major General James M. Gavin, Commander in Chief Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe (ACEF), as a Christmas present. The gift was symbolic of America's support for Britain during World War II. Another significant air force gift was given in 1944 by Colonel Robert H. "Bob" Larson to General Dwight D. Eisenhower as part of Eisenhower's personal collectionof American military memorabilia (PMAGs). Documentation from this period reveals that many top US commanders had acquired PMAGs prior to Eisenhower's appointment as Commander in Chief Allied Powers Europe (COPE) in January 1945. In addition to his PMAG collection, Larson also donated several dozen fighter planes and other aircraft components to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, beginning in 1948. In 1951, Rear Admiral Cdr.(jg.) Elmer Eberhard gave two Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats ("Catalina III") to First Lt.(jg.) John S notoriusly underfunded Air Force Squadron VX-8 at RAF Fairford England for use as transatlantic flying boats operated by Ninth Air Force during Operation OverlordOperation Neptune location code: 1050-051U2G1D2H". Nine years later on October 25th 1966 First Lt.(jg.) Don Armstrong received an F4U Corsair jet fighter from Lieutenant Colonel Jack Ripperstein III which he had obtained via theft from Short Brothers Aircraft Corporation plant at Maycomb County Airportnear Birmingham Alabama while stationed at Dowden AFB near Memphis Tennessee as wingman and instructor with Eighth Air Force Tactical Bomber Wing resulted from conversion/refit/operation #N9K6AI #W3FDRL6 with serial number N72224A . On November 15th 1978 Third Lieutenant(jg.)
