It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Saratoga Springs' most cherished marine gift history. Mrs. Alice Bemis passed away on Saturday, January 25th at the ripe age of 89 years. For over 60 years Mrs. Bemis was a stalwart supporter and collector of maritime memorabilia from all around the world. Her collection totaled more than 2,000 items and she donated many to Saratoga Springs Museum of History and Art, where they currently reside in the Archives Collection. Mrs. Bemis was born in Yonkers, New York in 1922 and spent her formative years on her family's farm just outside of town. She graduated high school in 1944 and went on to earn a degree at Fordham University before working as an administrative assistant for two companies until she married Mr. John Bemis in 1951. The couple moved to Saratoga Springs where they started trading boats with their friends and selling memorabilia from their travels throughout Europe, Africa, Asia Minor and America (including trips to Key West). They were active collectors both inside and outside of Sarataga Springs itself, donating many items to various museums along the way including Lighthouse Park (now part of the State Parks system), The Kings Hall Marketplace & Café (now home to local businesses), The Pavilion at Oneonta Lake (later renamed Riverside Park) and even moving into what is now called Alice's Place Maureen McHugh House which served as their home during much of their later life (the house still stands but has been converted into office space). In addition to her collecting activities, Mrs. Bemis also took an active interest in civic affairs serving as president or treasurer for several organizations including Friends Of The Library (later Friends Of Education), Women In Service League-Saratoga County Chapter #2 & 3/Yonkers-NY chapter#3 & 4/ NY state chapter #5&6/ NY city council member #1c/NY state senator -1986-1992; Board member for Stonington Chamber Of Commerce '87-'92; Vice President for membership development for Scannell Marine Inc., vice president pro tem for Stonington Chamberwomen 1985-'86; Trustee Emeritus for saratogasspensburghlibraryfoundation

Saratoga Springs, New York is a town in Upstate New York, United States. It is the easternmost municipality on the Mohawk River and home to Saratoga Springs National Park. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. The name SARATOGA SPRINGS may come from the Iroquois word Sàrátógài meaning "place of many springs." The first Europeans to visit Saratoga Springs were French colonists in 1624-25. In 1764, General George Washington called it "the most beautiful place I ever saw." The Spring of 1806 was the site of a battle that resulted in a Union victory over Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The town was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1846, by Judge John Armstrong Waddell. On July 1, 1898, Saratoga Springs became an independent city after being merged with several other villages in upstate New York following statehood within the United States. On May 10th of that year (1898), Mayor Augustus Prentiss dedicated the new City Hall which still stands today within what is now known asOld Town Square. On October 15th 1898 (Strawberry Day) Mayor Prentiss renamed Old Town Square Avenue for President James Kapp Albright who had been born there just six days earlier on October 14th 1898
The Saratoga Springs area has a rich history dating back to the time when the Mohawk people lived there. In 1792, General George Washington and his army moved into Saratoga County, New York after winning the Battle of Long Island. The battle helped establish Washington as a national hero. The town of Saratoga Springs was founded in 1814 by Major General John Sullivan, who named it for his Scottish birthplace, Lochaber. In 1825, President Andrew Jackson appointed Major General Anthony Wayne to lead an army that invaded Canada. When Wayne's army encountered strong resistance from the Canadians at Fort Erie, Ontario, he withdrew and traveled west to join forces with General Rainbow Burke on September 25th. Aftermath of this engagement led to Canadian Confederation and ended British rule over North America.
