It is bordered by the towns of Easton to the north and west, Schenectady to the east and south, and Auburn to the southeast. The area that would become Saratoga Springs was first settled by Germans in 1785. It was part of Albany County until 1821 when it became part of Erie County. The name Saratoga comes from two Dutch words: saratum (a kind of apple) and taughatta (a stream). In 1792, General George Washington called the valley "the most beautiful spot on earth." In 1814, John Cranch established a cabin near present-day Saratoga Springs as his winter headquarters for his cavalry regiment during the War of 1812. Cranch's cabin still stands today within walking distance of Saratoga National Battlefield Park. In 1825, Harvard College moved from Cambridge, Massachusetts to a location northwest of Saratoga Springs on land set aside for them by James Monroe. The college built their first building on what is now Congress Street. They soon after purchased additional land across Mohawk Creek from what is now Yesteryear's Coffee House on current State Street in order to build more classrooms and dormitories. The college's architecture reflects its origins as an elite institution with deep roots in Massachusetts society – including aspects like Collegiate Gothic Revival architecture and grand entrances flanked by stately pillars that can be seen today on severalbuildings around campus such as Senate Hall (built in 1830), Wellesley College Library (built in 1865), and converted into apartments known as Eliot Tower (now home to Microsoft Visual Studio). It wasn’t until 1872 that Alexander Graham Bell founded American Telephone & Telegraph Company with connections throughout North America via telephones which made possible incommunicado conversations without endangering public safety or disrupting traffic flow during important moments like presidential inaugurations or sporting events; this early formative moment helped lay the groundwork for modern communication technologies we take for granted today! Saratoga Springs was first settled in 1788 by the Moravians. They arrived in what is now Saratoga County, New York, after traveling through the Catskills and upstate New York. The town of Saratoga Springs was founded on November 7, 1788 by a group of thirteen settlers led by Nicholas Northup. Northup named his settlement after the capital of England, London. In 1814, President James K. Polk sent General Winfield Scott to survey the area around Saratoga Springs and recommended that it be made a military post for the United States Army. The town became known as "The Valley" because of its location at the junction of two valleys - the Susquehanna River valley to the north and east and Lake George valley to the south. After America's victory over Napoleon in 1814, many soldiers who had fought in Europe returned home and found work in Saratoga Springs. In 1825, Congress passed a bill authorizing erecting a military post at Saratoga Springs so that Ulysses S. Grant could supervise construction of Fort Niagara on Lake Erie from here. The townspeople responded by build an impressive fortification called Fort Clinton which still stands today (although it is no longer used). In 1828, John Fenton purchased land near where Fort Clinton now stands for $1 million dollars and began developing it into what is now downtown Saratogga Spring
