Scarsdale, New York (population: 20,000) is a small town located in Westchester County, New York. It is the seat of Scarsdale Township and was settled by Germans in 1795. The present-day township was formed from parts of two other townships – Northfield and Schertz – on April 1, 1868. The first settler in what is now Scarsdale was Johann Gottfried Kappeler who arrived in 1795 with his family from Germany. In 1802, he married Elisabeth Bachmann and together they founded the Bachmannskirche which still stands today as one of the most popular churches in town. Kappeler's death left his wife with an estate that included land for settlement and a mill which began production in 1807. In 1814, Daniel Dangerman built a house on the lot where he lived until his death in 1904. Dangerman was a lawyer and political figure who served as justice of the peace for much of western New York during the 19th century. He also developed Scarsdale into an important center for agricultural produce distribution during this time period. His tomb can be found at Christ Episcopal Churchyard off Main Street. During World War II, many residents of Scarsdale enlisted in military service including women like Edith Greenough who worked at local munitions plants; children like Peggy de la Paz who played ball at local parks; and young men such as James Roosevelt who helped unload ships at nearby Yonkers Naval Shipyard during wartime dreary days on Long Island Sound!

The area now comprising Scarsdale was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The name "Scarsdale" originated from a Native American word meaning "hollow place." In 1795, the village of Scarsdale was created from parts of the towns of Rome and Valhalla. In 1814, Peter Schuyler donated land to create what is now Scarsdale Village. In 1854, John Davenport formed the Iron Works Company in Scarsdale with seven associates and began producing tools and munitions for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Afterward, Davenport developed other businesses in and around Scarsdalen until his death in 1886. His son Julius Davenport took over his father's business operations until his death in 1918. During World War II, many workers served within manufacturing plants located in or around Scarsdale including those at Ford Motor Company (the largest employer there during wartime), General Electric (maker of radios and television sets), Chrysler Corporation (makers ofJeeps and other vehicles), Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Corporation (builders of P-51 Mustangs) and Boeing Airplane Manufacturing Division (builders of Boeing 707s).
