Schenectady, New York is a city in upstate New York on the Genesee River. The first European settlers in Schenectady were Dutch traders and fur traders who arrived in 1624. The town began as a small farming community on the east bank of the river near what is now Union Street. This town was called Montgomeryburgh after General Montgomery's father-in-law, Sir William Howe. In 1817, when Albany became an independent state, Schenectady became its capital. In 1814, when NYS took control of all Indian lands east of Seneca Lake (except for some sections within Ontario), it decided to annex most of western NY including Schenectady County and much of southern Tioga County (now Chemung County). On July 1, 1814—just two months after NYS took control—the first election under newly created state Constitution was held in Alburnus Township in SchenECTADY Co., N Y Vt.. The result showed that only 7 men out of over 100 voters cast ballots: 6 residents voted against annexation by NYS and one man abstained because he objected to paying taxes for what he saw as an unconstitutional government without representation from his township! This early resistance to annexation by New York State can be credited with helping create sentiments among many farmers throughout western New York against Great Britain during our revolutionary war years; this feeling would later lead to American independence! On December 30th 1840 Buffalo's James Seddon set off across Niagara Falls with his brother Johnathon wide awake at 3am going alone down both falls – seen as an incredible feat even today! The town was founded in 1786 by Loyalists from Northern Ireland and became part of the United States in 1791. It is located on the Schenectady River between Albany and Rochester. The site where present-day Schenectady was settled was first inhabited by Indian tribes and later claimed by both Dutch and English settlers. In 1614, the English established Fort Orange on an island in the river near what is now Schenectady University. The fort served as a trading post for fur traders before it fell to French forces during the North American Revolution. The British burned down Fort Orange in 1664 but resumed operations at nearby George's Ferry in 1665 after they captured New Netherland from Dutch control. The town of Schenectady was chartered on November 14, 1786, by General John Sullivan as one of thirteen townships within present-day Albany County. On February 22, 1787, it gained full incorporation as a city under the name "Newburgh".
